Superfood Spotlight: Peppermint

It’s candy cane season — so we thought it would be appropriate to chat all about our favorite holiday superfood: peppermint! ++ even more specifically — peppermint oil. We love peppermint because it not only smells incredible, but it has TONS of health benefits to make you look + feel fabulous ; ).

+ CLEAN HAIR

Add peppermint oil to your shampoo + conditioner for not only even more ah-mazing smelling hair, but also for dandruff protection.

+ FIGHT BAD BREATH

A great alternative if you’re not into mouthwash — rub a couple drops of peppermint oil on the inside of your cheeks + gums for a clean finish. ++ If you do love mouthwash, but not all the chemicals in store-bought brands, you can even add a few drops to water + swish for a DIY mixture.

+ CLEAR, SMOOTH SKIN

Peppermint oil stimulates the skin, helping to reduce flakiness + dryness — perfect for the winter months ahead!

Peppermint oil has been known to alleviate aches + pains for its natural anti-inflammatory + antispasmodic [aka anti-muscle spasm] qualities. If you have any of these ailments, try this:

+ HEADACHE

 Rub a couple drops on your temples + massage gently.

+ STOMACH ACHE//MENSTRUAL CRAMPS

Rub a few drops on your stomach//lower abdomen to reduce bloating + the agony of period cramps.

+ TOOTHACHES

 Remember that homemade peppermint oil mouthwash for bad breath? Gargle that for a bit for a toothache remedy [bonus: a little breath refresh, as well!]

+ NAUSEA

 A few drops of peppermint oil on your wrists, abdomen, + a side of peppermint tea should get your stomach feeling back to normal.

+ SORE MUSCLES

 Gently massage a few drops of peppermint oil on your feet, neck, hamstrings, etc. after a killer #sweatsesh ; ).

COMMON COLD

Use peppermint oil as a natural [++ way more tolerable] vapor rub on your chest to open your airways + help loosen mucus.

+ SUBSIDE HUNGER

The smell of peppermint or a cup of peppermint tea with or after your meal will help you feel fuller, curbing your cravings to continue eating past the point of satisfaction.

+ STAY ALERT

Running on little sleep, or have an extra long day ahead of you? Rubbing a couple drops of peppermint oil under your nose will help keep you present + attentive throughout the day.
