5 Tasty Ways to Spice Up Your Salads

Back to school means back to whipping up quick meals in between classes or study breaks. The typical salad that you make can be just that — typical. With the same old iceberg lettuce, dressing, + toppings that you use every time, it can get pretty unsatisfying to eat. To spice up your salads to taste different every time, try these 5 tips! 

ADD A TOUCH OF SWEETNESS 

Whether it’s freshly sliced or grilled or store-bought dried fruits, adding fruit to your savory salad will surely create the tastiest blend. Try these combinations in your salad that are definitely worth a try! 

  • Grilled peaches or apricots + goat or feta cheese
  • Apples + pecans
  • Strawberries + Avocados
  • Mango + Red Pepper Flakes 

EXPERIMENT WITH TEXTURES 

Now we all love our salads, but sometimes it’s more than just some lettuce! Different textures combined in your bowl can make all the difference in how you enjoy your salad. With the crunchiness of toasted nuts, the soft bite from avocados or hard-boiled eggs, or even that subtle burst from delicious baby tomatoes, the list goes on with toppings that can spice up your salad. Here’s a list of toppings that you can add to add some texture to your boring salads:

Although chicken breast is a staple in many salads + is easy to prepare in different ways ++ flavors, it can get tiring to eat all the time. Try these proteins that are high in protein + will satisfy your craving for something different! 

  • Chickpeas + Beans [Great to add to a salad for added protein. Half a cup has about 7 grams of protein!]
  • Sliced Turkey cold cuts OR Ground Turkey
  • Shrimp
  • Tofu
  • Eggs

ADD SOME GRAINS

Adding a rice blend or some quinoa to your salad makes ALL the difference, trust us! If you don’t have time to make any at home, try buying the microwavable packets that are incredibly easy to make at home [we love the frozen packets from Trader Joe’s]. Even adding a slice of whole-wheat bread or a small tortilla wrap alongside your salad can turn boring into exciting. 

THROW IN A VARIETY OF VEGGIES 

Even just switching up the basic lettuce that you use can liven up your salads. Arugula + shredded purple cabbage is our favorite to create a snappy, tasty texture in your salad! You can also toss in some roasted vegetables to create a delightful rainbow right in your bowl. Here’s a list of veggies that we love to add to our salads:
