All About Skincare — With Aya Muramatsu!

When you sweat 15+ times per week, you have to take skincare seriously! It is so easy for skin to get dehydrated from lack of water, but also from too much washing + harsh chemicals. While rinsing your face, slapping on moisturizer, + getting on with the day works for some of you [++ boy, do I envy you], the rest of us need to give ours a little extra T.L.C. I’ll start this off by saying I am a beauty junkie: my cabinet area in my bathroom is overflowing with products + I will be honest by saying I’ve used most of them less than 5 times.

Watching YouTubers + bloggers gush about their favorite products + having access to online shopping is my weakness, + when I saw it really wasn’t helping me, I decided to get some help.  In the past year I started to get really serious about my skin + started going to a dermatologist for my skin + MedSpa for facials + plan [shoutout to Tara at SpaDerma]. Here is what an average skin day looks like for me…

  • Wash face [Elta MD Foaming Facial Cleanser]
  • Face Mask [Optional//if time: if I feel like I’m starting to break out, I love the Origins Out Of Trouble 10 min Mask]
  • Pat serums into skin [Skinceuticals Phloretin CF, basically like a sunscreen that works from the inside out]
  • Oil-Free Moisturizer [Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion is my fav]
  • Eye Cream [Drunk Elephant C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream]
  • Sunscreen [Elta MD UV Clear Facial Sunscreen SPF 46 *zinc-based so won’t clog pores] **DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP, EVEN IF IT’S CLOUDY, EVEN IF IT’S WINTER!

  • Rinse face with water + pat dry with a clean towel
  • Hydrating Toner [Caudalie Moisturizing Toner, doesn’t dry skin out while keeping skin clean]
  • Oil-Free Moisturizer [Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion again]
  • Sunscreen [Elta MD Clear Facial Sunscreen again]

  • Wash Face [Elta MD Foaming Facial Cleanser]
  • Face Mask [Optional! I mask a few times per week since my pores clog easily. I LOVE a charcoal mask- Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask is great]
  • Serum [any hydrating serum is great, or skip this step]
  • Moisturizer [Any moisturizer that is a little heavier is better overnight, because your skin has time to soak in nutrients]
  • Eye Cream [Drunk Elephant C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream]
  • Retinol or Blemish Serum [PCA Skin Intensive Brightening Treatment nighttime retinol solution OR Skinceuticals Blemish + Age Defense Salicylic Acid Treatment. I use Retinol 2x per week + the Blemish + Age Defense the other nights. If you are going to use a Retinol, ask your derm first + also use a stronger moisturizer since Retinol tends to dry your skin out]

  1. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. TREAT IT KINDLY! Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, eating well, + using good quality skincare products.
  2. Expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better.
  3. Check ingredients!
  4. Use skincare that works for YOU. Not sure what you need? Book an appointment with your dermatologist or facialist to find out what your skin needs.

It makes me feel really good to take care of my skin. Do I get breakouts still? 100%. Is my skin perfect? Absolutely not. My best advice is to listen to what your skin is telling you + to ask for help when you don’t know what products to use. YouTubers + bloggers are wonderful, but they are not professionals.

Remember that your skin is a reflection of what is going on inside your body. Removing dairy + sugar from my diet has helped my skin tremendously, + has also made my body feel better. What works for me may not be what works for you! Keep listening, keep trying, + know that there are solutions! Keep taking care of your skin!
