Operation Organize: How to Create A Capsule Closet

2018 is finally here + we are so excited to get the New Year kicked off by cleaning out + reorganizing our spaces! You may have noticed that over the course of the year we often acquire more clothing than we get rid of. A great way to control this is by creating a capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is essentially a minimalist wardrobe, composed of as little number of pieces aspossible. Benefits of creating a capsule wardrobe are spending less time getting ready, less time doing laundry, decreased spending on clothing, ++ even improved body image since you are wearing pieces that allow to look + feel your best. This a great activity to start when you have plenty of free time, so be sure to put on your favorite playlist, grab a cup of tea, + let’s get started!

Begin by emptying your closet and dressers so all items are easily visible. We suggest cleaning your space before beginning so that you can easily lay clothes on your bed or your floor without additional clutter.

Love, maybe, trash, + donate//detox. One item at a time, work through your wardrobe. Hold each piece + inspect it carefully.

Love: Is this a piece you absolutely love + adore? Do you see yourself reaching for this item again + again? Does this item allow you look + feel your best? If you answer yes to any or all of these questions, place this item in the love pile! These items are the foundation of your capsule wardrobe + will help you identify your true style.

Maybe: Do you love the item, but never wear it? Are you unsure whether this piece represents the real *you*? Place these items in the maybe pile to think more about later. At the end, return to this pile and sort these items once more between the love + donate piles.

Trash: Is the item badly torn, stained, or visibly worn out? Place these items in trash pile.

Donate//Detox: Is the item not your style, but still has plenty of love + wear left? Does the item no longer fit you or suit your style? Place this item in the *donate* pile to give to your favorite charity//local clothing collection organization or post it in the CHAARG Fitionista Detox Facebook page for another CHAARG girl to love.

Begin hanging + folding the items from your love pile. As you put each item away take note of the colors, textures, + patterns you see. You’ll begin to notice we often gravitate toward particular colors, textures, + patterns. These are the colors and patterns you will want to choose when making future purchases so they may be easily mixed + matched with items pre-existing in your capsule closet. Also, take time to identify any essentials or wardrobe staples you may be missing. Keep these items in a list on your phone, so you always have it with you when you’re out shopping.

After creating your capsule closet, items will likely wear out + need to be replaced or you will note after clearing out your closet there are some essential items missing. When searching for items to add to your wardrobe, be sure to ask yourself the following questions: Can this item be easily mixed + matched with other items in my capsule closet?  Is this an item I should splurge or save on? Think of splurge items as those that will be staples in your closet, such as a good pair of jeans, and save items as those that are trendy and will likely go out of fashion soon, such as a peplum top.

The best part about creating a capsule closet? There are no rules! Is minimalism your 2018 intention? Try organizing your wardrobe as a single capsule closet. Are you a fashion-lover, but want to create a more *curated* wardrobe? Try creating multiple capsule closets [ie. Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer, Athleisure]. Your closet should be filled with those pieces that make you feel your best + bring you confidence.
