My #SWEATCATION in Puerto Rico + Lessons Learned

After years of seeing pictures + posts of seemingly magical, life-altering fitness + wellness retreats, I decided they were merely dreams to me — experiences I could never afford or commit to. That is, until I heard my top fitness//wellness role model was hosting a retreat to Puerto Rico with her Nashville gym, ++ I knew that I HAD to sign up!

Kate Moore is a goddess all on her own — if you read her bio you’ll understand why she is my fitness role model + literal #GOALS. She became a coach with Ketanga Fitness, an adventure fitness retreat company, + hosted her first retreat in the summer of 2017 with her own studio getFIT615. Honestly, it was such a last-minute splurge. A fellow CHAARGie [who joined me on this wonderful adventure] posted in our Chapter Facebook page that there were only two spots left ++ something in my heart screamed that this was meant to be.

So I signed up + had the most uplifting//fulfilling week of my life, which we called our #Sweatcation. We stayed in a beautiful beachside villa with a saltwater pool in the dreamy city of Rincon + experienced daily adventures. All wellness retreats are different, so this is only my experience, but here’s a recap of my week:

  • #CHAARGeats — acai bowls, locally baked guava bread, + coconut coffee
  • Morning sweat seshes + afternoon yoga//meditation
  • Paddleboard yoga
  • Waterfall hikes
  • Picking mangoes from our backyard!
  • Local art crawl
  • Hammock naps
  • Surfing lessons
  • Handstands + power poses
  • Swimming in the Bioluminescent Bay [++ subsequently getting stung by a jellyfish]
  • Horseback riding
  • Viewing + discussion of Embrace, the Documentary
  • Singing Despacito everywhere
  • Long walks on the beach

MONEY — Obviously some trips are more expensive than others, but I think I spent a total of $2,000 for the trip itself, roundtrip airfare, + spending money. I learned about time management + priorities to make something important HAPPEN. We’ve got to manifest our dreams somehow! : )

SELF-LOVE — Kate Moore is an incredible role model for self-love. Her golden rule is to not let your friends talk poorly about themselves. Watching Embrace, the Documentary with Kate + our whole girl gang was special + heartwarming as we discussed our journeys + helped each other with tips//advice. Of course nobody is perfect + Kate is a champion advocate for this ++ self love.

BOUNDARIES — The very first thing we did together was have breakfast at our villa + share our non-negotiable boundaries. I didn’t even think about *boundaries* being an integral part of a fitness retreat — this was a safe space where we learned to articulate the things we *need* to be okay + to feel safe. I also learned how to assert who I am in a group of almost all strangers ++ it felt really good to just be me.

GOALS — We shared our goals with each other, both personal + school//work related. This was important because it’s so easy to get caught up in whatever season you’re in or whatever project you’re working on. To stay grounded//focused + remember the goals you’re working towards, even setting them in the first place, is what keeps us sane + hungry!

INTENTIONS — I learned how to set an intention for any given moment or experience. We each shared what this retreat meant to us individually + the intention we were setting for ourselves. My intention was to leave room for growth + find myself again in this new lifestyle of adventure + openness that I’m seeking.

FRIENDS — In that openness + adventure, I found humility + confidence that allowed likeminded people to gravitate toward my energy. I realized there’s no point in fearing authenticity. As soon as I started to be confident in who I am + I noticed that the kinds of people I want in my life started appearing right before me. This lesson is by far my favorite because it’s the unique, strong, undeniable bonds I care most about finding in friendships.

PRESENCE — I learned about stillness in meditation + in nature. There were many moments I had to myself where I could reflect on my surroundings + my place in this world. I realized my happy place is sitting alone in nature with the breeze blowing through my hair. My other happy place is in new adventures + new relationships, where butterflies + uncertainty lay. Being present in each moment, no matter which end of the spectrum, is my new intention for life.

During meditations + open discussions on the trip, there were three books we kept referring back to. These books were sort of our source of inspiration for the week + have stuck with me even upon returning. Below are the books as well as a little quote from inside each —

Journey to the Heart, Melody Beattie — “If you’re spinning in circles, feeling lost + confused, trying to figure out where you need to be + not all that certain where you’re going, stop. Breathe deeply. Look around. You’re right where you need to be. Maybe you’ve been there all along.”

The Desire Map, Danielle Port — “Knowing how you want to feel is the most potent clarity you can have. Generating how you feel is the most powerful thing you can do.”

You Are A Badass, Jen Sincero — “The people you surround yourself with are excellent mirrors for who you are + how much you love yourself.”

++ That sums up my life-changing week in beautiful Rincon, Puerto Rico with some awesomely empowered bolt babes. Have you ever been on a wellness or fitness retreat? I’d love to hear about it!  Share on your #inCHAARG Insta + tag #CHAARGGOES!
