A lot of people ask how I discovered Share It Fitness + how we started working together. Well, it started off in a coffee shop [specifically Cafe 976, check it out!] in San Diego a year + a half ago. I had completed their 12 Week Total Body Blitz workout program prior [highly recommend, btw] + blogged about it, which gained their attention. We decided to connect + instantly realized the huge potential in collaborating on a FitPlan.
I had always wanted to build an online platform for all CHAARG girls that allowed us all to participate in a workout plan together. I figured this would be something that would be in the far future, along with a virtual community, but after talking with Matt + Dave + learning that their community was pretty much exactly what I was envisioning, I was extremely excited.
We decided to test out if you guys would enjoy an online workout plan last fall with the CHAARG 10 Week FitPlan + the rest is history. Since, we’ve created the CHAARG Spring Break FitPlan, CHAARG Bootycamp in the summer + now this Fall FitPlan. We hope to continue to collaborate on FitPlans three times a year, + even create holiday plans in the future ++ have the boys at the CHAARG National Retreat ; ) Anyways — we figured it was time you get to know a lil’ bit more about the guys behind Share It Fitness — Matt + Dave!
// MEET THE BOYS //
So, tell us a little bit about yourself! Where are you from? How did you meet? + most important ques ever — how did you both end up in California?
Dave — My family has lived in Charlottesville, VA [University of Virginia] for about 20 years + I lived there until college at James Madison University. Most of you have probably never heard of JMU but it’s one of the largest schools in Virginia [hint hint — CHAARG]! I lived in San Diego for a few years as a kid + had been wanting to move back as soon as I graduated. Been here since 2007!
Matt — I grew up in a Virginia suburb about 15 minutes outside of Washington, D.C. Dave + I went to the same college + had a lot of mutual friends. We ended up meeting in San Diego through one of those friends. I moved to San Diego 2007 + have happily made this place my home. I came out here on a whim, wanting a change of scenery that included a beach.
How did Share It Fitness start?
M — Share It Fitness began in 2010 as a way to offer OnDemand health + fitness classes to a wide range of people. We wanted to make fitness + health instruction more affordable + efficient than what was currently available. Currently, we’re focused on providing an online platform for health + fitness providers, business + groups [like CHAARG!] to provide fitness content + instruction to their fans, followers, and//or members.
D — The idea, over many iterations has developed into the training tool you use today + is undergoing changes every day! We see it as a tool that can bring together millions of people with similar interests around the country together through getting fit + healthy!
// THE MOMENT //
The moment you knew you wanted to work with CHAARG…
D — After our first trial Fitplan last fall, we saw the unbelievable sense of community + energy CHAARG’s members had, ++ your devotion to supporting + encouraging each other. What better model for the success of how our platform would support this kind of group? The rest is history.
M — I think I really knew I wanted to partner with CHAARG after our meeting with Elisabeth here in San Diego.
// THE WORK //
I would describe my job as…
D — CHO [Chief Hustling Officer] — I allow Matt to focus on creating new fitness content + supporting our 10,000 members’ fitness questions by handling all of the boring day to day business mumbo jumbo + long term strategic planning.
M — Chief content creator ++ fitness guru
D — I’m a simple man — a good spaghetti + meatballs made from scratch will put a smile on my face any time but pretty much any Italian will win me over.
M — This is like naming your favorite child [assuming you like all of your children] — I’m not sure I can do it, but I will say anything Indian is at the top of my list.
D — My grandma’s Christmas cookies — though she’s no longer with us, I get to keep her amazing cooking alive every holiday season by making her special recipe. No matter how many are made, they never last more than a week!
M — Baskin Robbins ice cream — specifically, mint chocolate chip and//or cherry.
// SWEAT //
If you could workout with anyone [dead or alive] who would it be + what workout would you do?
M — Dave Blackman. I’d be ecstatic to see him get into a gym at some point in his life. Anything that involved picking up weights would be fine by me.
D — Big wave surfer Laird Hamilton. I’m not a big gym guy [I don’t think Matt’s dream is going to come true], I prefer to work out outdoors…in my backyard, on the beach or in the ocean. He has written several books about living this kind of holistic fitness, using the environment around you + focusing on deep core strength vs what you might find prevalent in a cross-fit gym. We’re working on a one month intro workout plan for other people who share my frame of mind!
M — I’m still going to convince him someday.
[side note — Matt, we are totally with ya on this. The CHAARG girls will get Dave in the gym : )]
A song that gets me pumped up to take on a #sweatsesh is…
D — “Bombs Over Baghdad” by Outkast
M — “DARE” by Gorillaz
My passion is…
D — All things ocean — swimming in it, eating things that come from it + helping preserve it for the many generations to come…oh + Share It Fitness of course! : )
M — Improving the health + quality of life for those around me. I have a special passion for helping those who are often without means or ability to help themselves.
Three words to describe you…
D — Dedicated + Focused + Laid-back
M — Spontaneous + Motivated + Easy-going
// LIVE //
D — My Dad went to Ohio State + my Mom went to Michigan. Yep, we’re one of THOSE families!
M — I ran with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain this past summer.
Piece of advice for our CHAARG girls…
D — Don’t get discouraged if you feel like you’re having more trouble with certain workouts or the plan itself than others. No one is built the same physically + we all have our own goals + paths to achieving them.
M — Don’t be afraid to pick up the heavy weights. Fear of adding “bulk” is something I’ve heard from women of all ages throughout my 10+ years in the fitness industry. It’s a mental block that prevents a lot of people from making the type of body changes they envision. True, you might look or feel “bulky” for a couple of months, but give it time, stay consistent with your workouts, + eventually your body is going to shed that excess fat + leave you looking like a lean, mean, machine.
IN SHORT — UNDERSTAND THE SCALE DOESN’T PAINT THE TRUE PICTURE, LIFTING HEAVY WON’T TURN YOU INTO A LINEBACKER + EATING QUALITY FOOD IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY OF THE THINGS YOU’RE DOING IN THE GYM.
Let’s give it up for the boys! *clapping emoji* [+ can we talk about how cute they are? awe!] On a serious note — I know I can speak for every CHAARG girl who has completed a FitPlan — we are so thankful for all that you do + are so happy to have you a part of our community! Cannot wait for bigger + better things to come : ) +xo, elisabeth
