Goodbye Monday Blues: Here’s A 6-Step Guide To Turning A *Bad Day* Around
We’ve all been there — spilling coffee on our favorite shirt, bringing the wrong assignment to class, forgetting our lunch at home, lacking motivation at the gym — when bad days happen, they hit hard. As soon as one thing doesn’t go according to plan, we tend to automatically default to wearing a sour face, deciding that this day is shot — one that cannot be redeemed. Next time you feel a crummy day coming on, stop right there — we’re here to tell ya how to avoid writing off a day as *bad*.
When it comes down to it, happiness is a choice, + there is always a way to feel + radiate those positive vibes to turn a day around. ++ It’s easier than you think ; ). Here’s our 6-step guide to turn a *bad day* a great one!
#1] REMOVE YOURSELF + BREATHE
Take a moment to step outside of the classroom // office // wherever you are to remove yourself from the negative environment. A simple change of scenery gives you the space to clear your head + focus. Take long, deep breaths rather than short, shallow breaths so you can focus on slowing your heart rate.
#2] IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM[S]
What’s going on here? Take 5 minutes to journal about how you’re feeling + why. Putting it down on paper will help alleviate some of the stress + anxiety you feel in your mind about the current situation. Be specific + trace your steps back to the source of your frustrations.
#3] WRITE DOWN 3 POINTS OF GRATITUDE FOR EVERY PROBLEM
For every problem // stressor // worry you have in the moment, think of three things you’re grateful for + write them down. Regularly practicing gratitude + acknowledging what we’re thankful for helps keep us optimistic + fulfilled in our daily lives, ++ will help prevent more *bad days* in the future!
#4] ALLOW YOURSELF SOME *ME TIME* TO DO YOUR THING
We all have something we like to do to chill out when we’re feelin’ stressed — working out, baking, yoga // meditation, jammin’ out to your favorite tunes, watching Netflix, getting a massage… the list goes on + on! Whatever your *thing* is, allow yourself to indulge in it. #TreatYoSelf to something that will make you happy + clear your mind to help you end the day on a high note.
#5] RE-EVALUATE YOUR EXPECTATIONS
Now that you’ve had time to yourself to collect your thoughts, reflect on what brought on the *bad day* in the first place. Often times, a *bad day* is a direct result of the high // unrealistic expectations we set for ourselves [or for others]. Rather than setting the bar at an unattainable level, make a list of 2-3 manageable things you plan to accomplish within a day + be satisfied when you do. If you can accomplish more, great! If not, it’s ok. As much as we’d like to, we cannot do everything. Take it one step at a time.
#6] TAKE NOTE FOR THE FUTURE
Reflect on what triggered your *bad day* + what you did to turn it around. Make note of these elements + refer back to them in the future to nip a *bad day* in the bud early on. With this checklist, you should be seeing many more happy days going forward ; ).
