It’s time we get something straight. You, yes YOU, are totally capable of lifting weights + it isn’t going to turn you into a meathead. Really. I totally understand if you’re hesitant. As a former cardio queen + runner bee, I avoided the weight room at all costs. It’s always filled with sweaty dudes wearing tank tops cut to their belly buttons + grunting like the last rep may indeed kill them — that can be incredibly intimidating! But you know what’s even more intimidating? Having a CHAARG girl walk into the weight room with a bit of swagger — completely confident in her ability, her strength + her body.
Personally, I can tell you that I’ve never looked or felt better than I do when I started combining cardio with lifting weights. Being strong is sexy [+ it gives you a Beyonce booty — which I think we all can appreciate ; )]. But most importantly, it’s incredibly empowering to lift — lifting isn’t just for the boys + it’s time you let them know that.
++ if you still need persuading, here are 10 reasons why every girl should pump some iron…
1] METABOLISM BOOST
We’ve all wished we still had the same metabolism as we had in middle school. We ate what we wanted + didn’t feel the adverse effects. Now, lifting weights won’t return you to feelin’ like your hunger is endless, but it will increase your metabolism. Your metabolism will be working in overdrive after lifting weights at the gym — That’s what we like to call the “afterburn effect,” baby.
2] GAIN CONFIDENCE
Squatting a heavy barbell or push pressing it over your head is an incredible feeling. Being girly does not mean being weak or letting a boy do all of the heavy lifting for you. You are strong. Own it.
3] LEAN + MEAN MACHINE
Okay, not mean [besides your *FIERCE GAME FACE* you’ll definitely earn] — but absolutely LEAN. Let me make it clear that CHAARG is not about weight loss//fat loss//any-kinda loss. We’re about helping you find ways to be confident in your own beautiful skin. That being said, lifting weights will most definitely help you lose inches — faster than cardio alone. Why? Because lifting builds muscle + the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn.
4] STRONG BONES
Lifting decreases your risk for osteoporosis, which causes bones to weaken + become more susceptible to breaks + fractures. Don’t rely on drinking a glass of milk + hoping calcium will do all of the work — Take CHAARG of your bone health.
5] #GAINS ON #GAINS
Girls don’t get bulky. They get curves. Yep — this is how you can get a butt like our girl, Beyonce. Additionally, while muscle may weigh more than fat, it takes up four times less space than a pound of fat. So while you may have spent all of this time trying to lower the number on the scale, maybe it’s time to see it go up. ; )
6] CRUSH YOUR RUNS
Huh? Lifting improves your mile time? YUP. Mixing weight training with cardio builds your endurance + aerobic conditioning. Remember how much you hated running those hills? Well, with stronger quads, hamstrings + glutes from all of those squats, you’ll breeze to the top of those hills like it was no problem!
7] MISS INDEPENDENT
“Do you need help lifting [fill in the blank]?” Nope! You’re good. You just lifted a barbell weighing 20 pounds more over your head. Own your independence + show the world you are strong.
8] RELIEVE STRESS
Generally, exercising helps to relieve stress + anxiety, but lifters have consistently been found to handle stress better than those who don’t. ++ it even can improve your memory + cognitive function — who would want that?
9] PREVENT INJURIES
Not to get too technical, but a recent study by the British Journal of Sports Medicine found those who strength train reduce their risk of a sports injury by 68 percent. SIXTY-EIGHT PERCENT! ++ as someone who previously had injuries due to overuse, I can tell you that strength training has eliminated my issues with injury entirely.
10] EMPOWER + BE EMPOWERED
Strength has a way of seeping into all aspects of your life — in the weight room + out. With weight training, you’re constantly pushing yourself to do something you didn’t think you were capable of doing. “Lift this super heavy barbell off the floor + over my head? I don’t know…”. But ten seconds later, you’re already on your third rep. Pushing yourself mentally + physically is the key to progress in the gym, in the classroom, + in life. Not only will you be empowered by lifting, but you’ll empower others. Showing other women that you are healthier, happier + more confident will inspire others to #JoinTheMovement ++ change their life.
We want all of you CHAARG girls to celebrate being #GIRLSTRONG by posting #SweatSelfies in the weight room. Whether you’re working on arms, legs, or anything in between — we want to see you give it your all. Show ‘em what it really means to be a girl #inCHAARG.
