GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE SUN: 5 SUMMER TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN
As the sunny summer days begin, we all want to enjoy the weather to get a nice tan + some vitamin D! However, we need to make sure to apply SPF to prevent getting sun damaged skin. For those who work as a lifeguard [which was my first job ever!] or spend a lot of time outdoors, it is a must to apply sunscreen multiple times a day!
1] SPF OF SUNSCREEN
But first — what does SPF stand for? Well, it stands for Sun Protection Factor. SPF is the measure of UV protection from the sunscreen we use. We need to take this into account when we purchase sunscreen at the store! In an article called What is SPF Sunscreen, it states, “Dermatologists recommend using an SPF 15 or SPF 30 sunscreen.” This SPF is a form of protection that increases the percentage that shields our skin from UVB rays [depending on the SPF]. Our lips need protection as well + using a chapstick with SPF protection is also extremely important!
2] AMOUNT OF SUNSCREEN
When applying sunscreen, we need to make sure to lather our bare skin that gets exposed to the sun thoroughly. Ideally, the amount of sunscreen we need to use for our entire body is about 1oz. Our face alone needs to have approximately a nickel-sized dollop or about half a teaspoon. Although everyone’s body is different, our neck + arms need at least half a teaspoon, while our legs, front, ++ back of our body needs approximately a teaspoon.
3] WHEN TO APPLY SUNSCREEN
Did you know that it takes about 15 minutes for our skin to soak in the sunscreen? It is necessary to wait those 15 minutes before you let your skin be exposed to the sun for the most protection! Most importantly, make sure to ALWAYS apply sunscreen during gloomy days + indoors. When it is gloomy outside, the UVB rays may be weaker, but UVA carries more strength that penetrates through windows.
4] REAPPLY SUNSCREEN
If you are out in the sun all day, bring a bottle//spray of sunscreen + remember to apply sunscreen every two hours! However, if you are at the pool//beach or sweating in the sun, it is best to apply it more often because the sunscreen may rub off easily.
5] PROTECTING SKIN WITHOUT SUNSCREEN
Sunscreen is one way we can protect our skin from sun exposure, but there are other ways to stay protected [click here for more info!]. Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection, a hat or visor, + clothing to protect your skin. Additionally, stay in the shade + make sure to limit your time in the sun. A great skincare routine includes sunscreen protection not only during the summer, but all year round! If we do not protect our skin from the sun, then it will solely increase the severity of our skin in a negative way. There are many benefits to using sunscreen as it shields skin from premature wrinkles, sunburns, + lowers the risk of getting skin cancer. Make sure to appreciate the outdoors on a nice summer day + don’t forget to wear sunscreen beforehand!
