Last week’s CHAARG FitPlan challenge was to sweat + inspire + motivate others. But what about motivating yourself? We have two weeks left to kick it in high gear + finish the FitPlan off strong. A couple weeks ago we shared 10 ways to hold yourself accountable + reach your FitGoal — today, we are sharing how to create + most importantly, keep a fit journal. When the CHAARG FitPlan ends, we do not want you to go back to your old habits — we want you to keep CHAARGin’ forward. A fitness journal is an amazing way to track your progress + keep your inspired. OSU CHAARG girl, Elly, has a fit journal + is sharing with us what works for her!
I don’t know about all of you, but I live for lists. I love to categorize, collect, + cross goals off, especially when it comes to fitness. Whether it’s gathering ideas from Pinterest or ripping out pages from magazines, there were countless recipes, workouts, + tips stacked up on my desk + on my hard drive. The problem was that I rarely ever used any of them. After years of living like this, I decided to do something about it!
I decided to create a fit journal. It has kept me motivated to constantly upgrade + renew the active + positive lifestyle that CHAARG exemplifies. Even if you don’t have piles of articles, it is never too late to begin collecting anything that will help you to maintain the best version of yourself! Here are 7 steps to create + keep your very own fit journal…
1] BUY A BINDER
I found that this is the easiest way to keep the journal growing. Just hole-punch the new discovery + place it inside!
2] CREATE CATEGORIES
To be successful, there needs to be some form of organization involved. This could be by dividing the binder using general titles like “Recipes”, “Workouts”, + “Lifestyle Tips”, or being more specific + having subsections like “Abs”, “Upper Body”, + “Lower Body” within the “Workouts” section. There are really no rules for this part — it’s all about your personal preference!
3] REMEMBER THE INSPIRATION
I created collages for the front + back cover of my journal, complete with inspiring quotes + pictures. Having plastic covers on the binder are very beneficial so I can slip the page in + out to update the collage.
4] FIND//WRITE A MISSION STATEMENT
This statement is meant to focus on what you strive for in your life [in all aspects!] + it could serve as a source of simplicity when you need to re-center yourself on what you wish to accomplish. Need help finding a mission statement that fits you? Look no further than the CHAARG mantra : )
5] ADD IDEAS + ARTICLES
Luckily, I feel like I’ve had this journal for years in the making as I have collected different well-being resources since my early high school years. However, if this isn’t the case for you, don’t be discouraged! You can get started by reading magazines like SHAPE + Oxygen, looking at the infinite blogs online, or surfing Pinterest for content [check out the CHAARG Pinterest!]. The important thing is that you actually use what you find.
6] MAKE A CALENDAR
I have found it helpful to make a calendar. For instance, I label different workouts with a specific month [ex — this month I am trying out a rowing workout I found + next month, I will switch up my cardio with a step-machine routine!]. Keep in mind that this isn’t meant to be a more organized way to store ideas for later. This journal is meant to be interactive. In other words, for every recipe or CHAARG workout I utilize, I make sure I replace it with a new one.
7] VISUAL MOTIVATION
It is great to include pictures of women who inspire you to live this kind of lifestyle. It could be a shot of Maria Sharapova killing it on the court or a magazine clipping of Jennifer Lawrence’s guide to life . The important thing is that although these are wonderful sources of motivation — we must not become obsessed with someone else’s physical appearance.
PART OF CREATING THIS JOURNAL IS MAINTAING A HEALTHY PACE OF CHANGE + GROWTH + UNDERSTANDING THAT WE ARE EACH ON OUR OWN UNIQUE FITNESS JOURNEYS.
Fun, helpful, + even reflective — I found that keeping a fit journal keeps me excited to implement new recipes + workouts into my life. More importantly, it lets me stay on track by having a physical book that I swear by + keep all my goals in. Be creative + love the process of taking these ideas + making them into a reality! : ) +Elly

Alexis — On the #CHAARGRetreat14, I used the word “independent” as one word to describe myself. I’ve learned over the past few years that I am the sole person in charge of my happiness. Unfortunately, I didn’t always have this mindset. It’s taken a while, but I finally feel confident enough + ready to tell my story. From my last 3 years of high school up until right before my freshmen year of college, I was in an emotionally abusive relationship. Not the stereotypical kind of abuse, but the kind that leaves scars you can’t see. The good times were good, the bad times were really bad. Fights were worse than anything I had ever been through. When someone tells you how terrible of a person you are + how everything is always your fault, after a while you start to believe it. It completely distorts your self image + your perception of what a relationship is supposed to be. That’s something that sticks with you for a very, very long time. I started to lose who I was, + that’s such a scary feeling.
Once I got to Xavier, I started to find myself again, especially once we got a CHAARG Chapter. I fell in love with everything that CHAARG stands for. It helped me to not only find my fit + fall in love with fitness but it’s shown me that it’s not about what my body looks like, it’s about what my body can do. +, more importantly, how I feel. I am so much more than my past. I am not the same person I was four years ago. I still have days where I doubt myself just like everyone else. But every day is a new day + every day is an opportunity to make myself stronger than before. I couldn’t be prouder of where I am now. “Your past is just a story, + once you realize this, it has no power over you.” We’re all beautiful souls that are products of our past experiences, both good + bad. Everything you’ve been though has been for a reason + that is to make you the beautiful person you are today. You are loved + supported by almost 3,000 other CHAARG girls. I love this community. This community has helped to save my life + I am forever grateful for it coming into my life at the perfect time. I love every single one of you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.

Sammi — Don’t find time to exercise, make the time to exercise — I think this saying sends a pretty powerful message. Not only does it apply perfectly to me + my busy Wednesday’s [literally just now ending my day] but it applies to every CHAARG girl. We MADE the decision to commit to the FitPlan. We MADE the decision to start a transformation of not only our bodies but our minds as well. These are conscious decisions we have been making [together] for 4.5 weeks — which is awesome. So if we MAKE the time to work out, we’re honoring our commitments to ourselves + the 699 amazing women who made this decision with us.

AnaCecilia — Today’s motivational theme is going to be about the people that motivate me the most. The first post of the day is for my small group — #CeciliasSweatySoldiers — these girls make small group so great + definitely worth it. They remind me why I love working out + why I love being part of CHAARG. The other day I texted each one of my girls on a gloomy + cold day just so they could get a little motivation + their responses were great. It reminded me that just one little text could change their day around.
Motivational post number 2 goes to my best friend, other half, workout buddy, first roommate ever, + sister Maria. She was the main reason I joined CHAARG. The one who inspired me to change my life to live a happy + healthy one. The one who has always been proud of me in everything I do. The one who forces me to run with her on beautiful days + on vacations even though that’s the last thing I want to do. ++ she has been by my side since day one. I seriously don’t think I would be able to love fitness as much as I do without her by my side. Thanks for everything you do for me. Love you.
Third motivational post goes out to the rest of the UC CHAARG Executive Team. I am so happy + thankful with how welcoming you guys made me feel at the beginning of the semester + how helpful you all are. I am so glad to have you ladies motivate me every day during workouts + with everything else.
The last motivation post is about me. A lot of times I feel like I am annoying people with posting about how proud I am in my progress for working out + staying on tract to changing my lifestyle to make it better. I could get a lot of people to motivate me but the only one who can actually force me to workout + stay healthy is myself.
++ isn’t that the most important thing of all? Doing this for yourself. Keep sweating + inspiring, my friends! +elisabeth
