Finding Independence: 4 Steps To Make It Happen

INDEPENDENCE IS NOT…

Staying in a situation you hate just because of outside factors. Ignoring your feelings when you’re trying not to be emotional. Failing to ask for help when you truly need it. Selfish. Letting yourself feel dissatisfied when you really should treat yourself.

INDEPENDENCE IS…

Taking risks. Knowing your worth. Being assertive. Living everyday life in pursuit of what makes you happiest. Setting + respecting healthy boundaries. Knowing when to say no. Knowing when to say yes. Getting + staying organized. Challenging yourself. Taking responsibility for your own actions, be it good or bad.

Here’s how to start your journey toward independence when you’re ready to make the leap —

#1] KNOW YOURSELF

Getting to know yourself is one of the most important + imperative things you can do for your overall independence. Differentiating between what is truly *you* + what you let others see is a big step toward knowing yourself + in turn, accepting yourself. When you get to know + love the real you, your focus will shift + make living independently seem effortless. Great ways to get to know yourself include journaling, meditating + living with intention.

#2] DECISIONS, DECISIONS

It’s no secret that making tough decisions on your own comes along with being independent. Before making a big decision, our heads are spinning with *hows*, *whys* + *what ifs*. All to often, we fail to consider ourselves when choosing. Rather than thinking about other aspects of your life, consider all aspects of *you* + your feelings. Only you will have to live with that decision — why favor anyone else’s input?

#3] MARK YOUR CALENDARS

We’re always making plans. Even if it’s as simple as calling the doctor to make your next appointment [which we still wish our mom could do for us ; )], being independent means looking ahead + organizing our lives in the best way possible. What plans do you want to make? What kind of work will you have to do to get there? Do what meets your needs by finding a routine you love + stick to it.

#4] TAKE RISKS

Taking risks will only help you grow. When we take risks that pay off, we get more confident in ourselves + our capabilities, which tells us that #wegotthis. When we challenge ourselves + fail, we learn how to fix our failures + in turn, realize how strong we are in the face of adversity.
