How To Make Your Own Chai Tea Blend

I love chai tea – I may have a slight obsession with it. I recently had a friend tell me that I could make your own version at home ++ I am hooked! This is the perfect way to relax + treat yourself this season. Most of the spice are very common — you probably have a lot on hand! I only had to go out + purchase one of them – cardamom.

I wanted to create a custom chai blend just for us CHAARG girls – it’s full flavored + spicy + bold with a hint of sweetness that is perfectly tamed by a little almond milk. This recipe will teach you how to make the base spice mix that can be boiled with tea + water for the perfect cup. You can drink it with or without the milk + I’ve designed it so that each cup can be sweetened to your preference.

This recipe makes enough to store + have on hand for whenever you want a fresh cup of chai : ) ++ As a heads up, cardamom will be the most expensive spice — but it’s the most crucial spice to a good chai [it’s so worth it]. I can’t wait to hear what you guys think!


1 tbsp Black Pepper

2 tbsp Cardamom — ground

2 tbsp Cinnamon — ground

1 tbsp Cloves — ground

1 ½ tbsp Ginger — ground

½ tbsp Nutmeg — ground


Mix all of the ingredients together + store in an airtight container! Feel free to play around with the ratios to find your perfect mix CHAARG blend – this is just what I like — big + bold + spicy + sweet. Some other optional spices include —  fennel, star anise, + coriander. You can even use fresh ginger over ground for an added kick of flavor! [ps//can we just talk about how *gorgeous* all of the spices look together?]



Now that you have your spice mix, the only other items you need for your chai tea are: sweetener of choice, milk, loose black tea [or black tea bags], a pot + strainer.

I like to use loose tea, but you can just use a couple black tea bags if you’d like! This preparation will make 2 cups of chai – one for you + one to share : )


Boil 2 cups water + add 2 tbsp loose black tea [or 2 tea bags]. Add 1 ½ – 2 tsp spice mix + 2 ½ tsp sweetener [I used Stevia] + boil for ~1 minute. Remove from heat. If you have a way to steam// froth your milk – DO IT. So good. I gave it the good old college try + heated my milk + used a mixer to froth it before adding to the pot. It’s totally not necessary, I just prefer frothy milk : ) Add 1 cup milk to the pot + bring back to a boil. Boil for 2-3 minutes, remove from heat, strain + enjoy!


Boil 2 cups water + add 2 tbsp loose black tea [or 2 tea bags]. Add 1 tsp spice mix + 2 tsp sweetener. Boil for ~1 minute + remove from heat + let steep for 2-3 more minutes. Strain + enjoy!
