Build a Better Green Smoothie

Smoothies are, by far, one of my favorite summertime staples — so delicious + refreshing + they can be made with pretty much anything you have on hand. Not only are they tasty, but smoothies [especially the green kind] are a terrific way to get lots of fruits + veggies packed into 1 little cup. Don’t be fooled by the color — I promise they are yummy + 99% of the time you can’t even taste the greens! [YEY!]

For awhile, I had trouble with finding the right combinations + ratios for the perfect smoothie. After plenty of experimenting, I’ve found that simplicity is key. No need to throw in 2 types of juice, milk, yogurt, honey, 3 kinds of fruit, or the whole contents of your refrigerator… that’s when your smoothie loses flavor + you can’t even figure out what it tastes like anymore. Instead, stick to 1 liquid base, 1-2 fruits, 1 leafy green, + if you’re looking for a little #CHAARGup — 1 power boost. This is a pretty foolproof equation that should result in a perfectly CHAARG-worthy green smoothie. : )


Milk of any kind is a good starting point + always my go-to. Some other great [+ nutritious] options would be fresh fruit juice, iced green tea + coconut water . 1 cup is a pretty standard amount for smoothies, but feel free to add more//less depending on how thick you want your drink to be!


Typically 1-2 cups of your fruit of choice is a nice amount… I always use at least 1 frozen fruit– that way I don’t have to add any ice. Frozen bananas are my favorite — they make your smoothie extra creamy +  are a great natural sweetener + make a perfect base fruit for any smoothie! Peach, mango, pear, pineapple, kiwi + any type of berries are some classic + yummy options. Feel free to go ahead + think outside the box — get wild!


My 2 favorite greens to use in smoothies are spinach + kale, but there are a ton of greens that would work — romaine, collards + swiss chard [just to name a few!]. These leafy greens will give your smoothie that gorgeous green color [but do note: if you mix these with red or super bright colored fruits, your smoothie may turn a bit brown in color — still delicious though!] One large handful should be a perfect amount, but if you are like me + love packin’ in the greens, put them in last + stuff your blender until it’s full!


Every CHAARG girls needs a little #CHAARGup every now + then, so it’s time to give your smoothie a little boost! I’m a devoted peanut//almond butter connoisseur, so nut butters are my favorite protein booster, but there are plenty of options out there! Avocado adds a delicious creamy texture + even more GREEN. Chia seeds, ground flaxseeds + matcha make excellent choices as well + really up the nutrition factor! Of course, protein powder is every CHAARG girls best friend [especially About Time : ) ] so throw in a little for a killer post-workout drink.


There are so many options when it comes to making a delicious green smoothie. My tried + true combo? Roughly 1 cup skim milk, 1 frozen banana, 1-2 tbsp peanut or almond butter [which I sometimes swap out for some avocado] + spinach all the way to the top!
