9 Ways To Beat The *Dreaded* Afternoon Slump

Are you ever so exhausted by the afternoon that all you want to do is lay in bed for 20 hours + never leave? It happens to us all, but it can be frustrating when you have responsibilities instead of 20 hours to spare. When you need to tackle the rest of your day, try any of these tips to help get out of that [dreaded] afternoon slump.  

1] SWEAT IT OUT

Exercising is one of the best ways to get energized. After a tiring day, the last thing you may want to do is go to the gym, but studies show that a good sweat sesh can help get rid of that tired // groggy feeling by releasing endorphins. You’ll be more awake + in a better mood after working out, especially if you’re with other CHAARG girls!

2] STRETCH THOSE MUSCLES  

Stretching increases blood flow + helps with circulation, which ultimately makes you feel more awake. You can do stretches on your own, go to a yoga class, or even follow along to a YouTube video. Stretching can be short + sweet, as well as *flexible* with your schedule.

3] TAKE A POWER NAP

Taking a quick nap [10-20 minutes] can help you feel more awake + boost energy. They improve alertness, performance + ability to learn. Ensure your nap isn’t too long because you may wake up feeling even more tired // groggy than you were before [the worst feeling in the world!]. Next time you’re feeling exhausted after a busy morning, consider skipping the coffee + opting for power nap!

4] HYDRATE YOUR BOD  

Water is often the answer to any question related to the body because it’s essential.  About 60% of our bodies are made up of water, so water is extremely important in keeping us all functioning + healthy! Often, dehydration is the culprit behind an afternoon slump. Start hydrating yourself from the morning in order to prevent feeling groggy later on + aim for about 8 glasses a day.  

5] FUEL YOUR BODY WITH A SNACK

Our bodies convert food directly into energy, so try eating a nutritious snack filled with protein + carbohydrates. Some of our favorite snacks are a banana with peanut butter, whole-grain crackers with hummus, dried fruit with nuts, + yogurt with granola. Avoid eating anything with added sugar or a high caffeine content because while it may temporarily boost energy, it eventually leads to a crash + a bigger slump.  

6] SIP ON GREEN TEA

Green tea has many benefits + one is boosting energy! Green tea has a very small amount of caffeine compared to other *energy* drinks such as coffee — an 8 oz. cup of coffee has 100-150 mg caffeine, while an 8 oz. cup of green tea has 30-50 mg caffeine! With green tea, you don’t have to be afraid of crashing later on. In addition to its energy boosting capabilities, green tea also has many health benefits such as providing antioxidants, lowering cholesterol + reducing the risk of cancer — it also tastes amazing!

7] SET A GOAL + #TREATYOSELF

Setting a goal for yourself motivates you to focus + get things done. It’s even more beneficial if you give yourself a reward after completing your goal. Make sure your goals are reasonable; they just need to be something to help give you that push, not stress you out. Whether it’s hanging out with your CHAARG small group after you finish a homework assignment or painting your nails after cleaning your place, you’ll work because incentives work.  

8] TRY SOMETHING NEW  

Doing the same thing for a long period of time, like working on the same assignment or studying for the same class, can make you feel tired + bored. In order to change things up, try doing something else to give yourself a little break from the assignment // exam. Try studying in a new location, like a cute coffee shop or even outside. A little adventure will help you think outside the box. Your brain will thank you for it later!

9] BELT OUT YOUR FAVORITE SONG

Grab that hair brush, jump up onto your bed, + start belting out your favorite song. We all already do this, but at least now there’s a reason : ).  Singing gives you an emotional high that immediately puts you in a better mood. It is a great way to wake yourself up + have some fun! Next time you’re feeling tired, blast some Hannah Montana + give it your all, even if that means a live concert for your neighbors.
