I remember I started to see all kinds of coconut water pop up at grocery stores a few years ago + people were starting to go crazy about it. The first time I tried it, I was shocked. Why do people like this? I thought. This is not some coconut-ty delicious beach beverage, this is weird. But, since then, I have changed my ways + I swear by this stuff. The taste takes a little getting used to, but once you do, it’s all peachy [er… coconut-ty]. ; )
Coconut water is literally just what it sounds like: it’s water from the inside of a coconut [the younger the nut, the better]. It’s arguably one of the healthiest drinks you could have. Coconut, FTW — again [see why we love coconut oil here!].
Coconut water is better than any sports//energy drink + is often labeled “Nature’s Gatorade”. It is naturally loaded with all of the electrolytes, vitamins + minerals that are found in our fav sports drinks [like calcium, chloride, + potassium] but without any of the artificial sweeteners + high sodium content. Skip the energy drinks + reach for coconut water when you need a little boost!
2] SUPER HYDRATING
This nutrient-filled drink is also proven to be even more hydrating than water. A typical bottle of coconut water contains about 600 mg of potassium [which is great for workout recovery + replenishing fluids] while a typical banana contains around 420. I mean, water is my #1 drink, but this stuff is great for rehydrating after a tough workout, a hot day, or even a night of drinking [known for being a killer hangover cure — YEY].
3] REGULATES CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH
Coconut water can regulate blood pressure + cholesterol due to its high levels of potassium + lauric acid. People with high blood pressure typically have low potassium levels, so drinking coconut water on a regular basis may help to lower blood pressure + increase good cholesterol.
4] KEEPS YOU GLOWING
Apparently some people also put coconut water on their skin as a topical treatment for acne, dryness, age spots, + eczema. The cytokinins found in coconut water are said to help regulate the skin’s PH levels + strengthen//hydrate connective tissues. This, I have never tried, but I would say it’s worth a shot [a drink + a facial – why not?!].
5] NATURALLY FAT FREE
It is naturally free of fat + carbs + in some cases, it has proven to aid in weight loss + regulation. A typical bottle of coconut water contains around 60 calories making for a guiltless thirst-quencher [also it’s rich texture can help to suppress appetite].
One thing to make sure of is to choose a coconut water that is natural + without any artificial sweeteners//flavors. Also try to avoid concentrates, GMO’s + if you can, brands that pasteurize using heat [this is a tough one, but it’s possible!]. This will ensure that you are getting the best possible health benefits from this lovely drink.
The brand Harmless Harvest is possibly one of the best options [+ the best tasting, in my opinion]. It is 100% raw, organic + pasteurized without heat [+ sometimes it is pink in color due to varying antioxidant levels – how fun!]. Amy + Brian is another brand that is organic with no additives or concentrates. Harvest Bay carries some varieties that are certified organic [be sure to look for the label!] + those would also be a great choice! There are so many brands of coconut water to explore + depending on your grocery store of choice the options will differ. Just be sure to investigate + make sure you are getting the most out of this refreshing drink.
Coconut water is a little pricey, so I definitely do not keep a constant supply, but it is awesome to have on hand from time to time [especially during the hot summer or a challenging FitPlan!]. It will provide a nice little boost if you’re feeling extra thirsty or fatigued + it can help your body replenish the electrolytes lost during exercise or spending a day in the hot sun.
Looking for a summertime refresher? Try our WATERMELON + MINT COCONUT WATER [because we know how much CHAARGies love their infused water ;)]. This drink is so refreshing + the watermelon adds a little extra sweetness [+ antioxidants + even more hydration! #BOOM]
