5 Reasons Running Is The Best Therapy
As #runCHAARG takes off + a fresh school year is around the corner, things can get a little hectic. But remember — running is your FRIEND. Aside from the physical benefits of going for a good old-fashioned run, there are so many ways in which running can help us mentally. Of all the stress relief tactics in the world, I don’t think anything can really compare to a good run. So next time you need a little break from the stresses of life, consider hitting your local running trail! Here are five reasons why it’ll do you good…
#1] IT’S THE BEST FORM OF *ME* TIME
There’s no better opportunity to have some time to think [or to clear your head] than during a run. When it’s just you, the ground beneath you + the world around you, it’s the perfect time to fall off the grid. All you’re doing is putting one foot in front of the other + *breathing* — which is something we all need to remember to stop + do every once in a while.
#2] YOU BECOME YOUR OWN PERSONAL CHEERLEADER
Rather than looking in the mirror + commenting on how bad you think your hair looks, you can go for a run + focus your attention on what your body is capable of accomplishing. Your internal dialogue becomes so much more positive + you truly are cheering yourself on the entire way! If you can give yourself those positive pep talks, then you can push yourself to go farther, to run one more mile or to break your record mile time. When you run, you become your own motivator — rather than your own critic.
#3] IT CAN BE A TEAM EFFORT
The great thing about running is that while it can serve as some quality *me* time, it can also be an experience shared with others. Whether you’re exploring a new running trail with your best friend or running a 5K with 5,000 [AH!] fellow CHAARG girls, you don’t have to run alone. You can cheer others on while they do the same for you!
#4] IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW FAST YOU GO
Unless you’re competing in a track meet, running doesn’t require you to beat a specific time or set new PR’s. Sometimes, all you need is a light jog to get the blood flowing through your body + boost your creativity. There’s no reason to worry about your pace or how fast you can finish your first mile. It doesn’t have to be competitive, it’s all about YOU!
#5] IT DOESN’T MATTER WHERE YOU GO
There’s a lot of pressure on us as college students to have some sort of direction + to know where we’re going in life… As most of us know, that is RARELY the case. But with a good run, it doesn’t matter. When you’re outside, the world is your playground. You can run wherever. Every run is a fresh start, + you don’t have to have a plan. There are no rules, no instructions + no guides to where you should go. You find your path along the way, + sometimes, that’s the best kind of *therapy* we can ask for.
