Imagine the stress that would lift off your shoulders knowing you don’t have to worry about work the moment you leave work. No emails to check, no work calls asking for help — nothing. Work is put aside in favor of other errands or quality time with yourself, family, or friends. You would have plenty of time to relax, make yourself something totally delicious for dinner ++ read that book you haven’t had the time to before! Now imagine that is a law — because it is in France. The French government recently passed a new law to help reduce stress + you can use it too —
FRANCE’S NEW LAW
As of January first, any French employee of a company with more than 50 workers is allowed to legally ignore work emails + calls as soon as they clock out. What better way to manage that work-life balance? Some companies have even gone as far as completely shutting down the emailing system so employees can’t log in until the next day. The law was passed primarily to reduce work-related stress. A Gallup researcher found that cutting back on after-hours work created a physically + mentally healthier workplace. Now the French are able to unplug for a while + enjoy their free time however they wish instead of worrying about what’s going on at work long after they’ve clocked out!
USING THIS IDEA IN YOUR LIFE
So how does this law allll the way in France affect you? It may not be a law in the U.S. to unplug from work at the end of the day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it a personal goal! It may be hard to figure out if your work hours aren’t consistent, but where there’s a will, there’s a way. Next time you find yourself itching to check a work email or answer a call from a coworker, remind yourself that your work day is over + they can wait until tomorrow. Once you leave work, the time is yours to do whatever you want! Here are a few ideas if you find yourself wondering what to do now that you’re free from work + stress for the night —
1] Find a fitness class near you [bonus points if it’s something you’ve never done before!]
2] Go explore your city if you never have before
3] Finally read that book you’ve been too busy for
4] Call a friend // family member + ask them how their day was
5] Make a delicious dinner // meal prep for the week
6] Create a killer motivation playlist or listen to something new
Sometimes it can be hard to unplug from work! You may have a job that requires you to answer emails or take phone calls even if you’ve already clocked out, or you may work from home. It can be hard to balance work + life when you can’t necessarily leave work behind. When it comes to trying to unplug from work in these situations, the important thing to remember to do is prioritize. If you work from home, try taking the time to eat lunch without any work interruptions. Most jobs allow for a lunch break + this can be the perfect opportunity to destress — even if only for a half an hour! Dinner can also be a great opportunity to step away from work + have a bit of *me time* before diving back into your job responsibilities.
Take the time to set work aside + relax! You’ll feel less stressed + more prepared to take on the next day. Don’t forget to share with us on Instagram what you decide to do in your work-free time!
