If you’re a curly girl like me, summer is definitely an interesting time for your hair + the days spent in the sun, sea, + pool can result in some seriously unruly locks. The heat + humidity can take a toll on our hair — making frizziness a major issue. Controlling frizzy, curly hair can be a challenge, but with a few tricks you’ll be able to tame those locks in no time. Here are 5 tips to help you tame those wild summer curls + a super simple DIY leave-in conditioner!
1] LESS IS MORE
When handling curly + frizzy hair, remember that less is more. Lay off the shampoo a bit + see how your hair reacts. Shampooing too often strips your hair of its natural oils, leaving your curls dry + frizzy. Instead washing your hair out of daily routine, wait until your hair feels like it needs to be washed. A lot of sites swear by only shampooing 2-3 times a week, but personally I have to do more than that [especially with working out everyday], so just experiment a little + see what works best for YOU. As for hair products, the same rule still applies + less is always better.
2] LEAVE IT BE
Messing with curly hair when it’s dry is a surefire way to up the frizz factor, so make sure you wait until your hair is WET to do any tampering. This will prevent your curls from separating + causing all of that unwanted frizz.
3] DITCH THE HEAT
Lose the blowdryer + let your curls air dry. Leaving your hair alone after a shower + a quick comb-through will allow your natural curls to look their best! By air drying your hair, you are letting your locks soak up some extra moisture + which will help fight that frizz! Also, lose the towel drying trick — it steals the moisture your hair needs + separates your curls.
4] LOSE THE BRUSH
Right after you shower, use a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair. Brushing your hair causes frizz + breakage. Stick with a good ole comb + use it ONLY when your hair is wet.
Curly hair, especially in the summer, is dry + needs all of the moisture it can get. If your curls tend to be dry + frizzy, deep conditioning once a week will ensure your hair is staying well-hydrated. For a DIY option — try using coconut oil! Finding a moisturizing, leave-in product that suits your hair type can also help with this. I swear by Marrakesh oil + comb a tiny pump through my hair after every wash. It leaves my hair feeling soft, smooth + definitely less frizzy.
- 1 part Conditioner [pick your fav!]
- 3 parts Water [use a little more for fine hair // less for hair that’s thick + coarse]
- 1 tsp Oil [olive, coconut, almond, jojoba, or one of our fav hair oils: Marrakesh Oil!]
- 5 drops Essential Oil [optional, but pick your fav for major fragrance points — we love Almond!]
Pour all of the ingredients directly into a small, empty spray bottle. Once you have everything in there, shake it up to make sure it’s well combined! Spray onto clean, wet hair + comb through! This little spray on treatment will leave your hair feeling moisturized + incredibly soft [++ it’ll smell FAB too : )].
