You’ve powered through your final exams, your extracurriculars + your part-time job. You should be able to relax now that it’s all over. But chances are, there are still things that you’re going to need to do this summer: a full-time internship, research, extra summer classes, chores… the list goes on.
Yes, you’re working hard + staying focused, but you’re already burnt out + feeling empty. Too often, the things that we tell ourselves we have to do are not necessarily the things we truly WANT to be doing [taking extra classes, working jobs that we don’t enjoy]. Then we get busy + realize our time is being filled up with things that we have to do — things that drain us + make us forget where our passion went.
We live in a culture that glorifies being busy, overbooked + overworked. Our conversations have too much “I don’t have time,” “I can’t, I’m busy,” + “I have too much to do today.” It’s time to stop falling back into old routines. It’s time to stop the glorification of busy.
IT’S TIME TO MAKE MORE TIME FOR WHAT YOU LOVE.
“I don’t have time” should be eliminated from your vocabulary + every aspect of your life. I moved my piano keyboard to my apartment with me in January + didn’t play it for THREE months — because I kept telling myself I was too busy. But I’m not. When I’m spending too much time on social media, I could be playing piano. You are never “too busy” for things that you love.
We should be making it a habit to do more of the things that fuel our passions — more of what makes us happy + less of what doesn’t. We all have our “to-do” lists, + those can be overwhelming.
When you focus too much on your “to-do” list, you get stressed, tired + don’t feel like the best version of yourself. Overcommitment is ugly, + it wipes out both your mental + physical energy.
So start saying “no” when you need to. Better yet, start saying “no” whenever you want to. It’s time to stop committing to things we don’t really want to do + to start diving wholeheartedly into those that make us feel like the healthiest + happiest versions of ourselves.
CHAARG CHALLENGE: MAKE A *STOP-DOING* LIST
Now, we’re challenging you to change your perspective + make your “stop-doing” list. Make a list of the things that you do every day that don’t add value to your life, so that you can focus a little more on the things that will.
Here’s some of my “stop-doing” list:
- Stop spending too much time on social media
- Stop making excuses at the gym
- Stop feeling like I need to wear makeup to feel confident
If you can get rid of the things on your “stop-doing” list, then you’ll find that you do have time.
So – what are YOU going to stop doing from now on?
