We’ve been killing our #CHAARGBOOTYCAMP workouts + focusing on how we’re fueling our bodies, but it’s time we start showing some love to our SKIN! For us active girls, skincare is often an afterthought — or not even a thought at all [eeeeek!].
Exercise can be very beneficial to our skin — it increases our blood flow which nourishes our skin cells with oxygen + nutrients. It’s also an amazing stress reliever + studies have shown that a decrease in stress can lead to an increase in skin health. These benefits are great, but not taking the proper steps to protect our skin in + around our workouts can harmful to our health.
When we exercise our body temperature rises, we sweat, + our pores enlarge. Oil from hair + makeup can get trapped in these enlarged pores + the bacteria we picked up from the gym can invade! But, we can fight this! We’ve been doing amazing things for our health + happiness this #CHAARGBOOTYCAMP, but taking care of our bodies also includes caring for our skin. So, we’re sharing some tips to help you protect + keep your skin healthy — before, during, + after your workouts.
1] NO MAKEUP
Our pores open when our bodies heat up, allowing our skin to breathe + stay cool. But, wearing makeup won’t allow our skin to breathe as easily + it can also clog our pores — which can lead to breakouts!
2] SHOWER BEFORE THE GYM
When we workout we sweat, but showering before the gym will ensure that our sweat will be clean + no built-up bacteria will be released onto our skin. But, avoid showering both before + after the gym. This can overly-dry our skin + strip it of the good bacteria + oils that acts as a natural protectant for our bodies. If showering before a workout doesn’t work for you, shower shortly after [once you’ve stopped sweating] — so that sweat, + unwanted oils + bacteria don’t sit on your skin.
3] APPLY AN SPF MOISTURIZER
As soon as you hop out of the shower, give your skin some moisture! A moisturizer with SPF is preferable because sun protection isn’t a special *beach thing*, it should be an everyday habit.
4] WASH YOUR HANDS
Super simple, but washing your hands prior to working out is one of the easiest ways to your skin + keep your body healthy. It’ll remove bacteria, dirt, + oils from your hands + protect your skin.
Blot yourself dry instead of wiping or rubbing your sweat off. Wiping sweat can create tiny tears + breakages that make skin more susceptible to bacteria that can cause irritation.
2] DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE
Touching our skin can transfer unwanted germs, oils, + bacteria into our pores. Sanitizing machines + gym equipment may kill viruses, but the *cleaned equipment* still contains bacteria + oil that are unsafe for our skin.
3] WEAR A HEADBAND
If your head + scalp sweat a lot, wearing an athletic headband (like our #CHAARG headbands!) will keep chemicals from hair products + excess oils from dripping onto your face. Wearing a headband will help keep sweaty hair off of our skin — which can help prevent breakouts.
1] WASH YOUR HANDS
Don’t even think about it, #JustDoIt — it’s the easiest way to prevent skin irritation!
Working out opens up your pores + using a *deep cleanser* may seem like a great idea, but the harsh chemicals can really irritate your skin [especially if you have sensitive skin]! So after your awesome #Sweatsesh, wash your face with a gentle + unscented cleanser — your skin will thank you.
3] DO NOT SIT AROUND IN GYM CLOTHES
Though CHAARG girls loves to look like #fitionistas, wearing the sweaty clothes you worked out in can block your pores — let them breathe! Don’t worry — you can still rock the athleisure style, after you change.
4] EXFOLIATE 2-3 TIMES A WEEK
Exfoliation can help prevent the build-up of dead skin cells [Ewww!] — which can lessen the chances of your pores clogging. If you have sensitive skin, you’ll want to go gentle on the exfoliation or you’ll end up irritating your skin + doing more harm than good.
5] DRINK WATER
Before, during, + after! Drinking water is the easiest thing we can do to keep our bodies + our skin healthy. Aim for at least half of your body weight in ounces, per day ++ more if your sweatsesh is extra intense!
