It’s the time of year when we begin to see how lucky we really are + how much we’re able to make a difference in the lives of others. Try out one [or all!] of these volunteer opportunities to remind yourself what this season is all about —
Local hospitals are always looking for help, especially around the holidays. It takes a special person to work at a hospital + you’re guaranteed to meet some amazing people through this opportunity. Jobs may include working directly with patients, helping organize medical supplies + smaller, daily tasks that each area needs some extra help with. Everyone wants to feel that holiday cheer + what better way to give it than to spend time with others + spread the love.
2] ANIMAL SHELTER
Who wouldn’t want to spend a day taking care of cute pups + kittens? Your local animal shelter would love some extra help. Opportunities may include walking dogs, working in the office, fostering animals + helping out with events. It may be hard not to get attached, but if all else fails, take ‘em all home with ya : )
3] ADOPT A FAMILY
Although some of us love the holiday season, it can add a lot of stress to families who may be struggling. Through this organization, you’ll be “adopting” a family, which involves buying them gifts + personally delivering them. By adopting + donating you’re giving this family hope, encouragement + a little extra love. Adopt a Family also accepts cash donations that will be put towards gifts for additional families. Every donation counts when it comes to this org, so talk to your CHAARG execs + see how your chapter can help.
4] ALTERNATIVE BREAKS
Alternative breaks are sponsored by university or student organizations for college students to volunteer over an academic break. You’ll focus on specific social issues + complete hands-on projects relevant to them. Even in a week, you can see + feel a transformative experience. Most colleges have programs like Break Away, so encourage some of your CHAARG fam to join you for this one.
Most universities have a volunteer office + are always looking for students to help out. Do some research to see what’s out there + who could use you + your CHAARG chapter. Nothing comes close to the feeling of knowing you’ve made a positive change + have spent your time doing something worthwhile : )
