Rachel is a student at Marquette University. She’s participated in all kinds of sports — from skating + gymnastics, to soccer + ice hockey! She loves running, hanging with other CHAARGies, + ice cream. : ) Read on for her CHAARG Journey —
I joined CHAARG because some of my friends were already members, + I thought it would be fun to try something new! At first, I really did not know that much about the organization, but it it’s quickly become my favorite group that I’ve been a part of at Marquette. I love all of the amazing girls I have met in my chapter [+ through Instagram!]. CHAARG has been such an influential part of my college career — I wish we’d had a chapter my freshman year!
After playing team sports in high school, I took up running for a *different* way of staying in shape. Now, I love to run — there is no better feeling than accomplishing a long run. I’ve also started training for the Chicago Triathlon + have come to enjoy swimming, too! I can already see myself improving. I also love HIIT, hot yoga, + any recreational sports. I’ll try any type of workout because I love challenging myself to become stronger.
My passion for health + fitness became ignited after my first half-marathon, once I realized how much my body was capable of. I couldn’t believe that I had just crossed the finish line, because I could still remember a time when I hated running one mile in gym class — now, I’d just finished thirteen! Once running started to make me feel good about my body, I decided to also make more health-conscious decisions when it came to eating. Food really is fuel + you are what you eat — for example, ice cream might not be the best thing to eat the night before a long run or tough workout. I’m sure many of us have learned this the hard way. ; )
I am #inCHAARG because I love to push myself to be my most happy self + to feel confident with who I am // how I look + feel. CHAARG has helped me be able to finally love myself for all that I am worth, something I think is important for all of us. I’ve gained confidence by trying new workouts + meeting new friends through CHAARG. Now, I’m able to approach anyone + start a conversation — I love learning something new about others. CHAARG has taught me that it’s okay to need *me-time* + relax if I do not want to go out on a Friday night. Self-love should always come first! My views of health + fitness in general have also changed with my experiences. I’ve learned to be strong + not to punish myself for my imperfections or compare my own fitness journey to others’.
I want women to know that it is okay to hit rock bottom. I was there once — but with the help of friends, family, + CHAARG, I’ve been able to climb my way back up. Right now, I am the happiest I’ve ever been. : ) Joining CHAARG meant stepping out of my comfort zone + trying something new, but it’s important to remember that life is short — you may surprise yourself by what you learn to love.
