We had the opportunity to talk with Kristi Eramo, an elite CrossFit athlete fighting her way back to the 2017 CrossFit Games. During Kristi’s rookie debut at the 2016 games she competed with CrossFit’s biggest competitors + placed 8th overall! Kristi talked to us about her fitness journey + how she came to be the athlete she is today. Meet Kristi Eramo —
Tell us a little bit about yourself + your fitness journey.
I’ve been involved with fitness my entire life. My mom always had me playing every sport + outside all the time. I swam in college for the University of Louisville which led to marathons + triathlons. Then I found CrossFit. I was looking for something new + was looking for someone to hold me accountable instead of having to do everything on my own. I’m always looking for a way to stay fit + challenge myself.
When did you know you wanted to take CrossFit to the next level + go to the games?
After the 2015 regional. I took 10th in 2015 + was 35 points off from qualifying for the CrossFit Games, without putting too much into it. Missing it by 35 points, I wanted to see what I was capable of.
What does being a Strong Woman mean to you?
I was in the endurance world + I wasn’t eating enough. I wanted to come in, find fitness + find goals I can strive for, ++ be confident in myself. I’ve found my self-esteem change, my goals change, I feel happier, healthier, + more confident. Having goals you can strive for creates confidence + you can take that with you anywhere.
I take that into other aspects of my life. Weight training has brought a happiness + confidence into my life. You realize that pictures of girls in those magazines aren’t what we should be striving for, that isn’t my body type. I have my own thing + do my own thing.
How did you fall into owning + managing a gym?
I was in school for Accounting + I did the job everyone said I should do, but I was stir crazy at my desk. My boyfriend told me there was more to life + to take a chance. I went to work in a CrossFit gym + Starbucks in Lousiville. I helped the manager open a second. Then CrossFit Polaris popped up for sale + my mom always wanted to own a gym. I knew I had the business background to do it, so we took the chance. I had the background + the want to help change people’s lives.
What’s your morning routine?
Now – I wake up at 5 or 6am take a shower, go downstairs make coffee, 6 egg whites with a handful of spinach, fruit, + ½ an avocado. I drive to the gym with Tom Petty, or one of my favorite songs. Then I coach – I get to start my morning off with classes each day. After coaching I’ll stay + do a strength portion [Olympic Lifting] +//or a metcon workout with a barbell.
How do you ensure you’re recovering properly?
Sleep, sleep, sleep. 8+ hours of sleep. If I can, I try to squeeze in a 30-45 minute nap.
Also, eating well + hydration. If I don’t eat well, I feel sore + tired all around. I meal prep to make sure I have healthy options to grab + go.
How do you try to avoid injuries?
I see two different providers, Dr. Brittani Young of Airrosti for soft tissue work + Dr. Richard Ulm of Columbus Chiropractic for dry needling work. I see each once a week to work with my body. I try to spend 30 minutes warming up before I start my first workout of the day. This is newer for me + really really hard. I also listen to my body. If I’m tired I’ll do something else. I also give myself two rest days during the week, one active rest day [20-60 minutes of light aerobic activity] + one complete [active + mental] rest day.
What is your go-to pre-workout fuel?
½ cup Non-fat Greek yogurt w/ tiny bit of honey, 1/2tbsp almond butter, + some blueberries.
I love everything. Right now, donuts. I LOVE donuts + ice cream. Any flavor with chocolate, or peanut butter, or moose tracks.
If you could workout with anyone [dead or alive] who would it be + why?
Katrin Davidsdottir. She was so kind at the games, has achieved so much, works so hard, + is so positive. I like following Katrin + she seems like a great person. She’s very dedicated.
A song that gets you pumped to take on a #sweatsesh is…
Sail by AWOLNATION. It’s always good.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone starting their fitness journey?
Don’t quit. There are times where it is not easy + you feel frustrated. Set an end goal that you want to reach + remember it on your bad ++ good days. Don’t let anyone tell you it is impossible. Goals keep you going.
Words to live by…
“What lies behind us + what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. + when we bring what is within us out into the world, miracles happen.” // Ralph Waldo Emerson
I just think it reminds us to search within + look for your why + to keep searching for what you want to achieve.
