After pumpin’ those guns as part of the #CHAARGSBFP, it’s time to dress them up + show off what a good workout can do. ; ) That’s why we want to introduce you to Pura Vida – a bracelet company that helps support local artisans in Costa Rica. Giving back doesn’t stop there for the company — Pura Vida also partners with charity organizations on more than 150 bracelets, meaning you’re sure to find a cause that’s close to your heart.
We were lucky enough to talk with Griffin Thall, one of Pura Vida’s co-founders about what it was like to start such a positive movement. He walks us through the company’s inception + what it means to truly embody the Pura Vida spirit.
Start making room on your wrist now because by the time you learn more about Griffin + the incredible company he has built, you want every single one of the bracelets. [Did we mention they come in 1000+ different hues?!]
// MEET GRIFFIN, CO-FOUNDER OF PURA VIDA
Tell us a little bit about yourself + what you love!
I’m Griffin, and I’m the co-founder of Pura Vida. If we’re honest, I feel like I’m a kid that’s never grown up. I didn’t go to school to become the head of + a designer for a dominantly female bracelet company. When you’re a kid, you want to be a professional surfer; you want to go to the moon. I never said I wanted to be a bracelet designer, but I’ve always been creating + always loved to create. Building a brand like Pura Vida is the external version of what I feel inside.
Paul [the other co-founder] + I started the business without trying to start a business. We met these guys on the beach in Costa Rica, saw their bracelets + thought they were really rad. We asked the guys to make us a couple of hundred bracelets – 400 hundred to be exact – to take back home to the states. We gave them to our friends + family. We built a website + emailed as many people as we could. We put them up on Facebook + basically every avenue we could think of. Then, slowly, people started buying them + buying them. Then the momentum kept moving forward + it really just took off.
We have about 1,200 different hues, + I’d say about 166 of them are charity-related. That means 20 percent of the sale of those items goes directly toward the charity. All of the other bracelets are trendy + a variety of different colors. Those bracelets provide jobs for people in Costa Rica, like the guys we met about four + a half years ago when starting the company.
Now, a lot of companies are saying, “Hey! We should do what TOMS + Pura Vida are doing because that will help us sell more,” but I think that’s a bunch of BS. It gets away from what the brand is really all about.
I haven’t worn a bracelet for more than two days because someone always steals it from me! [*laughs*] I have no favorites. They’re all unique in their own way. I just honestly can’t seem to wear one past the two-day mark before it’s off my wrist.
Tell us about the spirit of Pura Vida + the lifestyle it represents.
It’s a live-free, carefree kind of lifestyle. It’s a vibe that gives you a life full of color. All of the people who work with us at Pura Vida dig that. We’re all young. The oldest person here is 32; I’m 28; + our average age is 21. We all try to go about our lives with as little worries as possible.
You’ve got to find a way to get out of the rat race + starting building yourself up on a personal level to reach toward that kind of freedom. Look at your life as a whole – whether it’s your home, your family, your friends…anything – if there’s something you don’t like or something that isn’t working, you need to just fix it. Confront it + change it. No one should ever accept the feeling of “I’m satisfied.”
What’s your favorite workout?
I’ve always been pretty active. I love skating + snowboarding + really love to surf. We actually live right across from the beach. : ) [SO JEALOUS!]
Chicken, avocado + quinoa w/ sriracha + tomatoes [check out the vegan version here].
Words to live by:
Live free – a spin off of Pura Vida, which means “pure life.” Try to have as few worries as you can. Don’t have any strings attached. No negativity or bad vibes. Generally, just try to avoid anything that slows you down like you’re going through molasses. Live a life where there is nothing holding you back.
I’m really passionate about making sure everyone is always happy whether it’s my general team or the team in Costa Rica. I also love anything that’s creative or new + different. I love the challenges, design + storytelling that go along with it. Honestly, I just really want to make a difference + watch things grow.
Find something that you’re really excited about + put as much effort into it as you can. That effort needs to come from your natural skill – not your desire to make a certain amount of money or to get a 401K right out of college. None of that will ever come unless you’re truly passionate about what you’re doing. Find where your heart is at + do what you love.
Were you inspired by Griffin + Pura Vida as much as we were? Now we want to know — how do you live out the Pura Vida lifestyle? In their words: The pura vida lifestyle is embodied by the enjoyment of a life lived slowly, the celebration of good fortune, + the refusal to take anything for granted. It’s about being free + living life to the fullest; it’s an attitude. Make sure to tag #CHAARGSBFP + @CHAARG in your posts!
