With the Spring Break FitPlan around the corner, some girls are in need of a way to do the weekly strengthening #sweatseshes without a gym. While many at-home workouts only require bodyweight, adding weights can be a great way to challenge yourself + spice up your normal routine! Figuring out which weights to use can be overwhelming — especially if you don’t have much experience with different types. Heading to a sporting goods store + staring down all the weights in the section can be intimidating! It’s a good idea to do some research beforehand + keep these simple tips in mind when considering which weights to buy for at home —
DETERMINE YOUR GOAL
Before you go out + buy all the weights you see, set achievable goals! Depending on the type of workout you want to accomplish + the effect you’re looking for, you’ll need to buy certain equipment that matches your goals. Fitness goals + experience level plays a major factor in choosing weights, especially if you’re not super comfortable with weights yet! For example, free weights like dumbbells + medicine balls are best for starting out [[+ and will help you with the SBFP ; )]. Make sure you research what equipment will work best for your goal before heading out + buying what you’ll need for your at-home workouts. Keep in mind that some goals may not even require weights — jump ropes, foam rollers, resistance bands, + ab wheels can also help you achieve your goals + change up your normal workout routines!
CONSIDER YOUR WORKOUT INTENSITY
FitPlan veteran or total newbie, the intensity of your workouts matters! If you’ve mastered the art of high intensity workouts, consider purchasing equipment that matches your pace [like a stable bench to help hold all those heavy weights!]. For any girls who have recently begun their fitness journey, a set of dumbbells may be enough for you. It’s also important to consider how the intensity of your workouts may change as time goes on + purchase weights accordingly. If you know in a month or two you’ll want to start with higher intensity workouts, consider a gear that may be adjustable. Make sure you buy equipment that works for you + whatever pace you choose to sweat it out!
As much as we may want to be a go-getters + purchase all the equipment in hopes of one day using it, make sure you’re not going overboard + buying too much! Remember the goal you’ve set for yourself + consider what you’ll need to achieve it. Chances are you won’t need every weight a store has to offer, so start with the basics you know you’ll need + go from there. Keep in mind that these weights are going to need a place to stay, so make sure you consider the space you have to store them before purchasing as well. Buy what you know you’ll need to start. You can always go back + find more if you find yourself in need of a better challenge!
