There are two types of people in this world — those who fall asleep *instantly* + those who restlessly wait until they eventually doze off. What’s interesting, though — you can switch from one to the other. I know because I’ve experienced both. While I consider myself blessed that I can usually fall asleep quickly, there was one point in my life when I honestly could not sleep. It was a time where I constantly worried about whether or not I was making the right decision about everything. Maybe that’s how you feel too — you can’t sleep because *something* isn’t right. Or maybe you’ve always had trouble sleeping because you’re a busy-bee + you constantly have ideas flooding your mind. Regardless, we’ve got some tips to stop your mind from racing when you’re trying to get those Z’s.
1] RECOGNIZE THAT THIS IS *YOUR* TIME
You spend all day getting shiz done — whether it’s working out//studying//going to class//working [especially if you’re post grad ; )] //running errands//meeting with friends. You deserve this time for yourself. When you can’t fall asleep, it’s often because you have so many thoughts going on that you can’t relax. Remind yourself that you’ve done what you needed to do + tomorrow is a new day to accomplish more of your goals [+ your to-do list].
2] HAVE A PEN + PAPER AVAILABLE
Sometimes you do think of a task that needed to be done the previous day. It happens. Having a notepad + pen on your nightstand will allow you to jot down your thoughts quickly without having to get up. Make yourself a to-do list for the first thing in the morning + you’ll be at ease. Then you can relax knowing you will see it in the morning + start your day without worry : )
3] KEEP THE LIGHT OFF
It’s natural for us to want the light on before we really fall asleep — it allows us to see, so if any last minute ideas pop into our head we can go do them before bed. But darkness is so much easier to sleep in + will tell your brain it’s time to rest for a while. This is especially important for when we wake up in the middle of the night. I always want to turn my light on because I’m [maybe ; )] afraid of the dark. But the light will keep you up as you see everything in your room + are reminded of your to-do list for tomorrow.
When all of your thoughts//to-do lists overwhelm you, breathe. Think of something positive. Whether it’s the last time you saw your CHAARG fam or your dream vacation, your thoughts can truly change your mind for the better. I used to seriously be afraid of the witch from Snow White [#truestory] + when I was too scared to sleep I would whisper *puppies are so cute, I’m petting a puppy right now* + it really helped! Everything will be okay — you just have to actually believe it.
From what I’ve learned + experienced, we can’t sleep when our minds aren’t at peace. Before you even try to sleep, make sure you’re working hard during the day so you can feel accomplished + ready for bed at night. Everyone approaches their rest time differently but having a solid community supporting you + a passion that thrills you will ensure you feel a *purpose* in your everyday life. It’s much easier to sleep when you know you’ve enjoyed today + are excited for tomorrow : )
