Ohio universities have a soft place in our heart — after all CHAARG was started at The Ohio State University. Although we love Ohio + all of the universities in it [there are so many!], we know that if we want to become more + more nationally recognized + truly create a movement, we have to branch OUT of Ohio. We always make it a goal to expand to only one Ohio university per semester — funny thing is, we never realized we would be expanding to another Ohio university in the exact same city as one of our current Chapters — University of Cincinnati. ++ it happened. + we couldn’t be more excited!
One [of the many!] thing we have learned while expanding is that every university has a very different process when setting up student organizations. Xavier’s proved to be quite challenging — they only approve student orgs in the fall + it’s a 9 week long process. We are determined to expand to every university in the United States — if not the world, so although this was a bit of a bummer [we originally had planned to expand to Xavier last Spring], we didn’t let this challenge stop us from spreading the movement to all the Xavier girls. We are so thankful [+ blessed!] that Sam stepped up the challenge in become the Ambassador during this time. Not only is she incredibly passionate about the CHAARG movement, but she is also so passionate about her university. We can’t wait for you guys to get to know Sam!

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT CHAARG?
I heard about CHAARG through all the recruiting that was taking place on our campus last year when it was first brought to XU. Unfortunately, due to a serious knee injury that left me incapable of doing most physical activity, I was unable to join. This past summer, I heard that XU CHAARG was looking for exec members + I knew I had to apply. After deciding to leave the Xavier Track + Field team because of my injury, I was looking for something that could fill the hole that was left from leaving the team – and CHAARG seemed like just the right fit. Even though I was not on CHAARG the previous year, I thought I would go out on a limb + still apply. I am so happy I decided to apply because CHAARG has been such an inspiration + motivation for me.
WHAT IGNITED YOUR PASSION FOR HEALTH + FITNESS?
Growing up, I was always involved in sports, particularly Cross Country + Track + Field. Running was my life for the longest time. The happiness + challenge of pushing my body past its limits, no matter how sore I was the next day, was exhilarating + at times frustrating. But I always had a team who was there to push me + keep me going whenever I was down on myself + my abilities. After I injured my knee + made the decision to leave the team I felt lost, frustrated, + mentally drained. Despite countless treatment sessions with trainers, my knee never seemed to fully heal, which prevented me from continuing to do one of the things I love most, which is working out+ running. It was discouraging at times because of my inability to do what I wanted, + it was also difficult to find it within myself to accept my limitations from my injury. Because of that, I found it hard to motivate myself to at least try to workout what I could. It wasn’t until after becoming Ambassador of Xavier CHAARG that I restored + rediscovered my love for health + fitness. CHAARG was exactly what I needed to help get me back on my feet, both figuratively + literally. CHAARG has given me new inspiration to overcome the obstacles of the past. It has been a roller coaster ride of ups + downs with my injury, but everyday I get a little stronger both physically + mentally through the help and support of my family, friends + fellow CHAARG girls.
ASIDE FROM WORKING OUT, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
I love trying all new kinds of things + going on hikes + adventures! There are so many cool places in Cincinnati, whether it is restaurants, parks, or other fun things. Trying new food + new restaurants is one of my favorite things to do since I love all kinds of food. I grew up right by the Cleveland Metroparks, so being outside, going on walks, or throwing around a frisbee is something I enjoy doing. I also like to enjoy the simple things in life, such as reading or doing homework outside on a nice day or just spending as much time with my family + friends as I can.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR FAV CHAARG MOMENT SO FAR?
My favorite moment from CHAARG thus far has been our Welcome Party because seeing all of the girls that showed up to the event helped me realize the importance + impact that CHAARG can have on girls around college campuses. The Welcome Party got my really excited for the rest of the year and all of the upcoming events. It also gave me reassurance that CHAARG was definitely something that I wanted to be a part of + it was something I will love to do for the rest of this year.
WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT BEING THE CHAARG AMBASSADOR AT XAVIER?
The fact that I get to be a part of the start of a movement here at Xavier + help CHAARG establish itself on our campus is an amazing experience. It has been a struggle getting the hang of everything + catching up with all the other Ambassadors, but I love what I get to do + the challenge it brings. I have a wonderful Exec Team. I could not be a successful Ambassador without them + all the other welcoming CHAARG girls across the nation. I love partaking in such an awesome organization + helping girls find their passion for health + fitness. We are all on this journey together + getting to be a part of it is just one of my favorite things about being the Ambassador.
