Katie Bedlion is a pre-nursing freshman at Kent State University. She works at a greenhouse + loves doing anything outdoors, especially running, biking, + kayaking. Like many CHAARG girls, she loves staying busy, waking up early, + sriracha. Read on to learn more about Kathryn’s incredible CHAARG Journey —
For a majority of my life, I resented any form of exercise that wasn’t coordinated with volleyball ++ for anyone that knows my family, I was truly the oddball out in that sense. Overall, my parents have always encouraged a healthy lifestyle — my dad is a triathlete, my mom runs half-marathons + both of my brothers are play multiple sports. We all kept healthy foods in our house + made conscious choices. I kick myself for it now [++ as I type this, realize how ridiculous this truly was], but almost as a way of rebellion, I completely hated it. I would keep bags of Doritos in my room, binge at my friends’ houses + dragged my feet at anything that closely resembled the dreaded *healthy* lifestyle. While I treated all of that as a joke, I was always embarrassed about how I looked. Looking back now, I’ve realized how twisted my mindset used to be but am almost thankful for it now, because I can always look back on that time + know where I never want to be again. I needed to change + will be forever grateful that I did.
As a freshman, I was looking for ways to potentially meet new people + become involved on campus. My roommate Shelby told me about CHAARG, so I went online + found out what it was all about. Next thing I knew, I met the Kent Chapter + got so excited! Little did I know what kind of community this truly was + the people I would get to meet! I am *so* incredibly thankful for the girls I have come in contact with + things I have learned since joining.
I am #inCHAARG because for the first time in my life, I can honestly say I truly care about myself + have begun to take both my physical//mental health seriously. I used to be ashamed of the person I had let myself become + the help//encouragement of this community of girls has done nothing but continue to help me improve! I realized enough was enough — it was time for much different approach.
I can whole-heartedly say that CHAARG has been one of the most positive impacts on my life thus far. Not only has this organization helped me see myself in a different light, it has helped me realize that there is a true beauty in seeing what you can do. Whether it be my 6AM small group on Thursday’s, Studio Spotlights or even on Instagram where I’ve met incredible, encouraging girls who I am so, so thankful for! I’m no longer hesitant to try new things, reach out to new people or worry about the way I might look when working out. While I am starting to see physical changes, the change in my overall mindset has been unbelievable. I’m proud of the person I have become, ++ the confidence, knowledge + friendships I have gained along the way.
My advice to CHAARG girls is to be proud of everything + anything you do!! Whether it be getting an A on an exam you studied your butt off for, running that extra mile or even getting up early enough to see the sunrise – always push yourself to do more than you think you can. Be thankful for the process + proud of what you accomplish!
My all time favorite quote is a set of lyrics from “Awake My Soul” by Mumford + Sons — “Where you invest your love, you invest your life.“
