Self-care is crucial in working towards self-love + happiness! It reduces stress + helps you refocus on your goals + priorities. We hear all the time about the countless ways to practice self-care, like spending time outside,taking a nap, or having a spa day. While those activities will help, there are countless ways to practice self-care on a deeper level + leave you feeling happier longer —
1] LET YOURSELF FEEL
We often times over-analyze our emotions because we feel they may not always be what they should. However, emotions are meant to be felt — why else would we have them? One of the best things you can do is to let yourself feel. Whether you need to sit back + cry for a few minutes or rant to a close friend about a tough class, take time to fully feel. Accept the emotions for what they are, ++ use them to learn how to be patient with yourself. Even if you can’t stay still for long, going for a walk or run is a great way to work out all those thoughts + clear your mind. Whatever way it may be, allowing yourself to feel all emotions that come your way will help you feel better overall, teaching you how to use those emotions to better your day!
2] TAKE 20 MINUTES A DAY
Whether it be early in the morning or right before bed, try to spend 20 minutes a day doing whatever it is that brings a smile to your beautiful face! 20 minutes may seem like a lot when looking at your jam-packed schedule, but those prioritizing those minutes for yourself can make a huge difference. Set aside your to-do list during this time + do your favorite thing — read a book, enjoy the sunshine, or treat yo’self to a delicious coffee! ; )
3] LISTEN TO YOUR OWN OPINION
It’s common to want to make those in your life happy by always listening to what they expect from you, but it can cause serious damage to your mental health to constant do this. When you start to try to please others all the time, your happiness begins to depend on them instead of yourself. Take a step back from time to time + consider what you want, not what others expect from you. Listening to your own opinion allows your happiness to depend on you + what you need instead of always trying to please others!
4] COMPLIMENT YOURSELF
Ever notice the way a person’s face lights up when they receive a compliment? Maybe it came from you or from someone around you, but it makes the receiver smile. Why is it so easy to compliment someone else + so difficult to accept compliments from yourself? It may feel awkward to stare at yourself in the mirror + say even one good attribute about you, but after awhile, you begin to feel comfortable + start to believe it. Every morning when you get out of bed, look in the mirror and tell yourself, “You are beautiful + you are loved.” You are!
Self-care is so important on the journey to happiness! We should try everyday to practice methods that make us feel light + happy. Everyday each + every one of you should remember to put yourself first!
