Take a second to picture the coziest things you can imagine. A warm cup of coffee, piles of throw blankets, late-night Netflix bingeing after a hectic week, a bubble bath with candles, sunlight pouring through the windows on a lazy Saturday morning… Danish people have a word for this warm-and-fuzzy feeling — Hygge. If you’ve never heard of hygge [pronounced *hoo-guh*], you’re not alone. It’s only recently become a trend in the United States + despite melting snow // rising temps telling us that spring is right around the corner, it’s never too late for you to indulge in the relaxation + warmth that comes from the inside out. Read on for more ways to incorporate hygge into your everyday routine —
1] CREATE A HAPPY HOME
Meik Wiking, author of The Little Book of Hygge, describes it as *taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things* — You can start by cozying up your digs. In college, it’s hard to make your tiny half of a dorm room feel like home, but scented candles, throw rugs, + wall tapestries add just enough personal touch to make it your own space. Throw on your comfiest joggers + order yourself a new Anthropologie mug — Your room will officially feel hygge-fied.
2] GET INSPIRED
Dreams don’t only happen when your head hits the pillow. Let your mind wander in real life, too — create a vision board, spend an hour or two scrolling through Pinterest, or write out a list of goals for yourself in the next month, year, + ten years. Hygge living means turning your off the outside world for a while + focusing on what makes you feel most fulfilled instead.
3] TREAT YO’SELF
There’s a reason that millennials are considered the *burnout* generation — When we’re constantly on the go, it can be hard to hit pause + take a break sometimes. Next time you’re feeling high-strung, let hygge be your excuse to unplug from Group Chats, social media, + whatever assignments you can put off for the moment. Treat yourself to your favorite movie, a good book, or a DIY face mask.
4] *STAY IN* WITH FRIENDS
Stay cozy even when you’re socializing by inviting friends to your apartment for a dinner party. Make it a #TacoTuesday or serve up a yummy power salad with local, fresh veggies. Hygge is all about *cozy togetherness* + connecting with those we love. Set the table, hang up string lights all around the house, break out Cards Against Humanity, + make sure to bring your best dance moves ; )
5] START A PASSION PROJECT
Make your me-time more productive by using it to plan out your next big idea — maybe a passion project. While you’re snuggled up in bed, green tea in hand, try browsing online for ways you can give back to your community. Maybe you’ll volunteer at a soup kitchen, tutor kids at your local elementary school, visit a senior center, or coach a youth sports team. Whatever you decide, your body + mind will be well-rested when it comes to putting your plans into action.
Taking time to relax shouldn’t have to feel like a sacrifice. Let hygge be the excuse you need to kick back, cozy up, + chill out — You deserve it <3
