Water is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. It keeps you moving, your joints healthy, + it can even help with cravings. We all know water is good for you + we want to drink *more* — but how? We pulled together some of our favorite tips on how to drink more water ++ keep yourself hydrated throughout the day —
1] SET A GOAL
Setting a water goal helps you determine how much water you’re drinking + at any point in the day lets you know if you need to up your intake. We all know the *general* rule of thumb — drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water a day, minimum. A similar suggestion is the 8 X 8 rule — eight 8oz glasses of water per day. When working with a registered dietician, they may help you set a goal based on your diet + a myriad of other factors [rest day v. workout day // weight // *other* goals]. No matter how you’re getting to your number — set the goal + stick with it.
2] MEASURE YOUR CONTAINERS
Some water bottles have measurements along the side + some have cute designs or fun sayings [– if you’re lucky it has both ; ) ]. As you are drinking water throughout the day, it is nice to know where you are ++ how much you are actually drinking. If you aren’t sure how many ounces one of your water bottles holds — measure it! Fill a measuring cup [preferably with ounces on the side] + count how many cups your water bottle can hold. 2 times to fill x 8 ounces per cup = a 16 ounce water bottle. If your goal is to drink 64 ounces of water, fill up + finish your water four times that day. Now you know you’re *accurately* meeting your goal.
3] TRACK YOUR INTAKE
There are so many ways you can track how much water you are drinking. Some smartwatches are equipped with a health app with a feature on tracking your water. No smartwatch? No problem. You can download a host of different apps to help you track your water intake // set reminders. Bonus points if it helps you set your water goal! If you don’t want to be *tech dependent* use your brain : ). Just know how many times you need to fill up + finish ++ you will be all set.
4] TRY THE GALLON CHALLENGE
We all know the benefits of water + wanting to set better habits for ourselves. If you find yourself missing your goal more often than hitting it, try the Gallon Challenge [a gallon a day bay-b ; ) ]. Yes — you will drink A LOT of water, but the health benefits are worth it. People will wonder + ask you why — but be honest. You never know who you can inspire to start the healthy habit + you’ll become more aware of your own.
5] INFUSE FLAVOR
Water can get boring. You might find yourself craving any type of flavor + reach for a sugary flavor pack or drink. Start a *water prepping* habit + cut up some fruits and // or veggies to infuse your water. Borrow a friend’s idea or create your own flavors — the possibilities are endless. You can start simple with a few lemon wedges, or change it up with Grapefruit + Orange + Blueberry. Make a pitcher of one flavor when you’re home + make smaller flavor bundles to bring with you on the go. When a craving sets in — you’ll be ready to spice up your water with some flavor.
6] BRING IT WITH YOU
This sounds simple + it is simple — bring your water bottle with you wherever you go. To class // to the gym // to your meetings // to your friend’s house — always have it with you. Then there is no excuse to meet your goal. If you’re traveling, save a little money + bring some water bottles with you. Pack a few waters for a car ride [+ plan for an extra stop ; ) ] to save money + stay away from the sugary drinks. Airport security will let you bring your own refillable water through as long as it is empty. Once you’re through you can fill it up + be on your way. Even if you know your destination has water B.Y.O.B. — bring your own bottle. You’ll be more aware ++ hydrated.
