Reflexology is an ancient western therapy dating back as far as 4000 BCE. It’s based on the belief that our hands + feet are *mirror images* of our bodies ++ that by stimulating certain pressure points here, we can also heal the organ systems they correspond to. Treatment has been thought to promote immune health, decrease stress, + relieve chronic pain [which could DEF come in handy post-workout ; )]. Today, reflexology is offered by many practitioners ++ can be done at home, too —
REFLEXOLOGY FOR BEGINNERS
Treat yo’self to a hand massage that targets whatever mental // physical problem you might be experiencing. For example, you might press into the notch of your palm between the thumb + pointer finger right before a big interview to calm a nervous stomach. Similarly, the tips of the fingers may relieve a headache, + the outer palms might ease back + leg pain. What’s great about this treatment is that it’s cheap, easy, + individualized to meet your needs.
1] GET COMFY
Find your softest pillows, light a candle [or two!], + choose a favorite essential oil. Relaxing the muscles in your hands will allow you to find pressure points easily, for a more effective reflexology treatment. Then, close your eyes + focus on whatever area your body needs good vibes sent to most. : )
2] MAP IT OUT
Check out the reflexology hand chart above + press firmly into the points of reflection in your hands that go along with the areas you need to work. Gradually increase the pressure + hold for 30 seconds, then repeat. If this causes discomfort, try using your thumb to apply lighter pressure in a circular motion, switching directions every 5 seconds.
3] REFLECT + RECHAARG
You may want to follow up your reflexology sesh with a 10-minute meditation. Put on relaxing music or simply sit with your thoughts for a moment + think about the energy you’ve sent from your hands to all the other parts of your body that need it most. Make sure to drink several extra glasses of H2O to flush out any toxins released within the body — mix things up with your fruit-infused water of choice!
Reflexology charts may seem overwhelming at first, but if you’re looking for a quick fix to your mind + body ailments, it might be worth a try! Get in touch with your energy points + let us know how it helps by tagging @CHAARG on Insta. <3
