Candles are perfect for bringing warm glows + smells to any room. There are three main types of candle wax used in the candle-making process — paraffin, soy, ++ beeswax. Each candle wax has its own pros + cons, but any candle can improve your mood, settle your nerves, ++ bring harmony back into your life after a few hours of burning. Find your scent, choose your wax, ++ light your body + mind from the outside!
Buying your fav candle? More often than not, the candle contains paraffin wax. Paraffin is the most common type of wax used in candles across the market because of its versatility in melting points + ability to fit in many different containers. Paraffin wax is an odorless + white by-product of the gasoline-refining process. When searching for a candle, be aware of “highly scented” candles or candles with metal wicks. Some paraffin candles leave large amounts of residue after burning, which can cause skin irritation, ++ metal // lead wicks can emit dangerous chemicals + particles into the air. Luckily, around 80 percent of candle manufacturers use cotton // paper wicks instead! : )
Soy is a natural, vegetable candle wax used in many organic candle varieties! Most soy candles burn clean + slow in that they do not release as many toxins into the air + burn for longer! Essential oils are often used to improve the scent of the candle + calm your senses by emitting a therapeutic aroma. Unfortunately, not all soy candles are 100 percent paraffin wax free + may contain the same heavy scents as paraffin wax candles. Stay on the lookout for pure soy candles because a candle with only 51 percent of soy wax can still be labeled as a soy candle!
Beeswax candles are by far the most natural + long-lasting candles on the market today! The wax is a byproduct of the honey-making process, so the candle cleanly burns a sweet honey scent — a natural fragrance! Beeswax is also extremely powerful because it can clean the air of pollutants + allergens. The wax releases negative ions into the air when burned, therefore neutralizing + destroying air pollutants with a positive charge. Although beeswax candles have many health benefits, people tend to shy away from purchasing them because of their price. Beeswax candles can be up to 6 times the price of paraffin candles, but when it comes to your health, sometimes a treat every once in awhile can be worth it!
