We all know there are so many amazing benefits for girls lifting weights — it’s a metabolism boost, it builds strong bones + it is a major stress reliever. But, too many of us hit a roadblock when it comes to stepping into the weight room. Our comfort zone may be on the cardio machine or on our mat, but a CHAARG girl knows the benefits of mixing it up + liberating ourselves from the elliptical.
Gym-timidation happens to the best of us ++ it is really hard to get over. However, everyone starts somewhere in their fitness journey + we are all newbies at some point! Starting something new is scary + hard, but even if we’re afraid, we have to keep going.
You can do this! I know it seems crazy — some of us never even set foot outside of our cycling studio or yoga class. It’s time to overcome the fear of the weight room —
The biggest fear for many when going to the gym is not knowing what to do. The anxiety surrounding what all of the equipment does for you + how it works is overwhelming. The best thing you can do is educate yourself before your first workout. Utilize the internet + search common machines on YouTube + watch videos of the workouts happening to get a feel for proper form + expectations.
We realize this can only do so much — watching it at home is completely different than doing it at the gym, surrounded by people that seem like pros ; ) Your next step is to get a tour of your gym. Not only does this help you get a layout for where each machine is, often the gym staff can help you learn how to use the machines. Ask campus recreation or the staff at your favorite gym what they can do for you — their job is to help you!
Speaking of utilizing staff at the gym — they want to see you succeed + feel comfortable during your workout as much as we do. Considering hiring a trainer for a few weeks if you’re really concerned with getting it down quickly + easily. Long-term, this may not be for you, but take advantage of the information you can learn from a trainer if you can! Yes, this is more of an investment, but if you’re eager to get into lifting fast, this is a great option. Some campus recreation centers even have discounted or free training programs or group training programs to help you get started.
All of the above helps you to have a set plan — which is all you really need to get lifting. Knowing what you’re doing eases your nerves + will help you to avoid the *everyone is staring at me* feeling. Grab one of the great CHAARG workouts + get it, bebe! : )
A little bit goes a long way, especially when you’re just starting out. Find 5 or 6 exercises that you love + get them down. Build confidence with those exercises ++ then think bigger — this will help you be ready for anything + you’ll have the confidence to try new things! Also, go to the gym during off-hours — start here + work your way up to the after work gym rush or whatever time works best for you. Plus, a CHAARG girl knows, there’s nothing like an empty gym workout ; )
FIND A BOLT BABE
After doing all of the above, grab a bolt babe, get your athleisure on + go. Having a friend to lean on when you’re nervous is the best — you’re in this together! Perhaps you’re both starting + you work out your awkward stage together, or maybe she’s a gymrat + she can show you the ropes — either way, you can hold each other accountable + have fun doing it!
Don’t let fear derail you from your goals — Get. It. Gurl!
