Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner [props to ya!] or have recently run your first 5K, destination races are a great way to start [+ finish!] a training program + travel at the same time. Whether it’s a Disney World marathon or a 10K in another country, the options are endless + a great way for you to actually *run the world* ; ) But first —
1] CHOOSE YOUR DESTINATION
The options are endless since nearly everywhere in the world offers races frequently. Whether you pick the destination first or you pick the race, keep an open mind to be open to new experiences.
2] PLAN YOUR TRAINING
If you choose a half marathon training program that takes at least three months, maybe don’t plan a last minute weekend getaway to run your first one. Wherever you are, you want to ROCK your race + feel 100% ready!
3] ADJUST TO YOUR ENVIRONMENT
Depending on where you travel, your climate + landscape might be different than what you’re accustomed to. If you know you’re traveling somewhere a lot warmer than home, practice wearing extra layers of clothes. If you’re traveling somewhere a lot cooler, maybe keep some of your training indoors on the treads. If your destination + route has more hills, make sure you practice some training on the treads so you’re not overwhelmed. Bottom line — practice, practice, practice!
4] PRIORITIZE YOUR HEALTH
Anytime you travel, you’re susceptible to sickness with lots of unfamiliar germs. Along with your travel essentials, plan to bring your typical *cold meds* in addition to your Emergen-C or Airborne. Especially if you plan to land on the ground running [literally!], you’ll want to be prepared so you’re feeling A-OK to run it out.
