Setting + reaching goals are big steps toward making a change. Goals give you something to work for + allow you to measure your progress along the journey! Often times we expect to see change happen much more quickly than it actually does. While it may be discouraging, it is important to remember to keep going so that you reach your goal —
1] START SMALL
When starting down any new path, it is important that you don’t overload yourself with too many changes. For example, making a goal to *eat healthier* sounds simple, but there are many components of a healthy diet. Instead of changing every aspect of your diet all at once, start small + choose one habit to change. If you want to start drinking more water, focus on that, create [+ maintain] your healthy habit, ++ then add something else when you feel you’re ready. If you want to experiment with removing processed foods from your diet, start by removing one *go-to* processed snack at a time + go from there. Remember, when starting any journey, it is okay to start with one *thing* at a time.
2] SLIP UPS ARE NORMAL
There are multiple factors that can impact your plan to reach your goal. A meeting may come up, the weather might not cooperate, or a new ice cream flavor comes out that you can’t resist! Take a day to shift your focus + then reset. Learn from the situation so that you have a plan for next time. A journey to reach a goal isn’t going to be a perfectly straight line. There will be twists + turns along the way, but you can [+ will] handle it ++ keep moving forward. Let yourself have fun + splurge. A mistake // slip up doesn’t mean failure — it is an opportunity for learning + growth! : )
3] ADJUST YOUR GOALS
If you find yourself unmotivated or in a plateau, look at your goal + see if you need to adjust. Is your goal a blanket statement — *be healthier* — or is your goal a SMART goal? If your goal doesn’t feel *SMART* take a minute to adjust + create a goal that aligns more with your values. Make a plan + then get going! You might also have to adjust your goal for new challenges. Recently moving, starting a new job, or a new load of classes might impact your plan + current goal[s]. Evolve + shift your goal so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. Your goal should excite you + be something you want to work towards. It is your goal + your life, so adjust to make it fit you. Think back to the reason why you set your goal in the first place. If it no longer makes sense to you or your life, adjust according to what matters most to you — you will change + evolve over time, your goals should as well!
4] REACH OUT FOR HELP
There is no shame in asking for help at any point during your *process*. There are different professionals out there for different areas of focus, like Registered Dietician Taylor Riggs or Cat Aldana of Eat Stretch NapTM. They are there to help you with your goals + make adjustments where they are needed. You can also reach out to your family + friends for accountability if you feel you need more support in your everyday life. Of course, #TeamCHAARG is here to help you with your goals. We want to see you succeed + become the best version of yourself. Reach out to girls in your chapter or online whenever you have questions or simply need the support of a motivating + uplifting community when working towards your goals. : )
5] IT WILL HAPPEN
Change doesn’t happen overnight + when you introduce a new fitness // lifestyle change, it will take time to see changes. You see yourself everyday + you see the changes you are making in your life to reach your goals. It will take time for your body to adjust to a new routine, but your body will adjust + adapt. Keep the thought in the back of your head that it takes about 4 weeks for you to see changes, about 6 for those close to you, ++ about 10 for the *rest of the world*. Keep working hard towards your goals while allowing yourself some breathing room for adventures, rest days, ++ treats! Change takes time, but it will happen + you’ll crush your goal!
Whether you’re setting new goals or revamping old ones, it is important to remember that nothing happens overnight. Change takes time + it is OK to reach out to different resources available to you. Tell us about your goals on Instagram using #inCHAARG + #GoalDigger!
