Studying abroad is one of the best ways to change your perspective of the world while gaining so much real-world experience on your own. It often means lots of traveling, which can be hard on your body if you don’t take care of yourself properly. Whether it’s walking, hiking, biking, or running, you will likely be moving a lot more than you’re used to because you’re seeing the world! [Almost] always opt for the scenic route to enjoy the views while staying active. However, safety should be your priority. It’s uncommon in some countries to run for exercise, so always be alert when running by ditching the headphones ++//or running with friends. In some countries, running is only acceptable in parks + exercising in sports bras is not common, so always be aware of cultural norms, too.
2] MAINTAIN A ROUTINE, DON’T CREATE ONE
If you try to start a new workout routine while abroad, you’re probably not going to commit to it on top of a ton of other new things. If you’re used to doing #FitPlan workouts or practicing yoga regularly, consider redoing them or continuing your yoga practice. Many gyms offer student discounts, but you can also utilize parks or invest in some inexpensive resistance bands + a jump rope to keep you active on the go. I also hear that if you’re creative, wine bottles make awesome impromptu dumbbells ; ) Don’t feel bad if you miss a couple days of workouts — I mean, would you rather do leg day or ride a camel?!
3] EAT FRESH + LOCAL
Farmers + street markets are a great way to buy inexpensive produce + you can even practice your bargaining skills : ) Stock up with your friends + try cooking local meals together for authentic, culinary experiences. It’s a great way to save money while getting in all your nutrients!
4] TRY EVERYTHING IN MODERATION
A lot of traveling revolves around food — with good reason! Whether it’s gelato, pasta, fondue, pastries, wine, remember that you are abroad to experience life, not to restrict yourself from it! There are going to be dishes that you may never get to try again in your life — why resist?! Most portions are smaller in other countries anyway, so ditch that guilt + remember it’s all about moderation. #TREATYOSELF
