Summer vacation is the perfect time to get our wanderlust on. The grass is green, the flowers are blooming + there is just so much to see ++ do. But before we can begin the journey to our final destination, we have one often *unpleasant* task to get through — packing. Whether you’re hiking through the Smoky Mountains or lounging with some good reads in South Beach, we’ve got a few packing hacks to make your life a little easier. Check them out [before your bedroom looks like a hurricane ran through it ; )]!
LIMIT YOUR *STUFF* //
We love our Nikes as much as the next CHAARG girl, but you’re dreaming if you think you need to take four pairs with you [we know, we know, you want to color coordinate your fav athleisure outfits ; )]. By packing items you can mix + match, you’ll be able to fake that *girl with the endless wardrobe* vibe. Take only enough outfits [plus one extra, just in case ; )] for the week + even less #sweatsesh gear — you can almost always do laundry! ++ For those darn shoes [how is a girl to choose?!] reduce your traveling collection to three — one pair of tennis shoes, a pair for everyday activities + one *nicer* pair for dinner + drinks. While it’s tempting to bring *everything* [we love to be prepared ; )], just keep it simple!
KEEP YOUR DESTINATION IN MIND //
Lying on a beach in SoCal versus kayaking the shores of Maine call for completely different packing lists. For example, you aren’t going to need more than one sweatshirt//legging combo if you’re heading to a warmer climate in the summer. Keep this in mind before you start packing too. When doing your pre-vaca shopping, don’t fall victim to the *but this will look so cute walking the streets of Paris* thinking — if you don’t think it will become a staple of your wardrobe when you return, leave it on the rack.
DOWNSIZE YOUR TOILETRIES //
That 32 oz bottle of shampoo sitting in your shower? Leave it at home. Not only does it take up a lot of space, but it will add a couple extra pounds to your suitcase + you probably won’t use all of it on your trip. Instead, take a trip to Target + get yourself a set of small plastic bottles to hold your soap//shampoo//conditioner [bonus if they’re TSA compliant!]. If you’re feeling extra thrifty, ditch the conditioner, shaving cream + body lotion for a small jar of coconut oil [it’s magic, we swear ; )]. As for your skincare + makeup routine, keep it minimal or au naturale + don’t forget the sunscreen! Wrap all of these items in disposable plastic bags — you don’t want them to get all over your clothes should they explode!
MAXIMIZE YOUR SUITCASE SPACE //
More space means more room for shopping during your trip ; ) Start by packing your *extra* outfit + any valuables [laptop, iPad, wallet, Passport, phone + chargers] in your carry-on before you load up your suitcase. Investing in a suitcase with pockets + compartments will give you a place to put your sock, undies + accessories without having to pack additional smaller bags to hold them. Rather than folding your clothes, roll them up — trust us, this saves a ton of room! ++ don’t worry about that bulky sweatshirt that just won’t fit. Wearing it on the plane will save space + keep you warm during that long flight : )
When in doubt, leave it out! Unless you’re backpacking the Pacific Crest Trail, running out of toothpaste or forgetting your bikini won’t be an issue — you can purchase them once you arrive at your destination.
