When you’re starting your fitness journey, it is easy to get wrapped up in the number on a scale. A lot of people associate diet + exercise with losing weight, but there is so much more to your journey than a simple number on the scale.
WHAT IS A NON-SCALE VICTORY?
A non-scale victory [or NSV] is just that, a milestone // big win // success in your fitness journey that has nothing to do with the scale. A NSV can be used by someone who is trying to lose // maintain // gain weight as a part of their health + fitness journey. It can be something material [how your clothes fit] or more of a *feeling* [feeling happier // more awake]. Really anything can be considered a non-scale victory + everybody loves to hear about them!
WHY IS A NSV IMPORTANT?
Non-scale victories are important for different reasons. If you’re in recovery, a NSV will help you find ways to fall back in love with your body + with food. They can help you see how powerful + strong you truly are. If you feel like you’ve hit a plateau in your weight loss, taking your milestones away from the scale will help keep you on track + remind you why you fell in love with fitness to begin with. CHAARG members Karleigh + Emily both see why NSV are important. You start measuring how you feel, instead of how much you weigh. Start by taking a progress photos [not just before + after] + you will start to see your transformation. Pay attention to how you’re feeling + how you are moving ++ if you are getting stronger. All of these are much more important than measuring a number on an electronic device.
OUR FAVORITE NON-SCALE VICTORIES
If you know you want to move away from measuring your progress on the scale, but don’t know where to start we have you covered ; ) We pulled together our favorite NSVs for all women —
— HITTING A PERSONAL RECORD
PRs happen everyday. Walking into the weight room + pick up heavier dumbbells, running a faster mile, taking 30 minutes of *me time* when you normally take zero, those are all personal records. You do not have to wait until race day to hit a new record, keep moving through your routine + you can have a new PR weekly.
— PROGRESS PHOTOS
We all try to take before + after photos for the CHAARG FitPlans, but these do not have stop when a FitPlan isn’t happening. Continue taking progress photos throughout the year to see how your body is changing. Don’t forget to include the month + year so you can see how far you have come. Progress pics are great for seeing weight loss + weight gains!
Falling asleep faster, waking up rested, + getting in 8 hours of sleep are NSVs. Your body is telling you when you’re ready for sleep + when you’re ready to be awake ++ you can actually keep up. You may also find your attention span improves because your body is rested + functioning properly.
Remember, there is so much more to you + your journey than a single number. Share with us your Non-Scale Victories on Instagram using #NSV + #inCHAARG.
