Cardio is more than going for a run, spending hours on the elliptical, or a way to log bolts. Cardio is known to strengthen your heart + lungs, reduce stress, relieve symptoms of depression // anxiety, ++ increase bone density. If the idea of adding cardio sweat seshes in your week sounds like a chore or a drag, here are some other fun cardio workouts to incorporate into your routine —
1] ICE SKATING
Ice skating isn’t reserved only for the Olympics — whether you’re experienced or a beginner, the rink is a great place for a fun cardio workout. You can experiment with twists, turns, ++ spins [carefully, of course!] If you’ve never skated before + you’re nervous, bring some fellow CHAARGies with you for company + support. You can always count on a CHAARG girl to keep you from falling. : )
When you think of a dancing workout, you may immediately think of Zumba, but there are plenty of other dance workouts out there! If you’re more into hip-hop + pop songs, try WERQ or Jazzercise. If you don’t feel like dancing with a class, blast some upbeat tunes at home + dance around your living room! Dancing has been proven to boost serotonin — the *happy hormone* — in your brain, so enjoy yourself ++ dance like no one’s watching. ; )
Has your chapter done TITLE Boxing yet? There’s a reason CHAARGies tend to love TITLE + classes like it. Combining upbeat music, enthusiastic instructors, ++ self-defense moves creates an exciting workout that will get your heart pumpin’ + keep you moving the whole time. If there aren’t any boxing gyms nearby, check your local rec + see if they offer any classes! Some cardio kickboxing doesn’t include actually punching a bag, so there are many options!
Whether you’re doing laps or some version of the doggie paddle, swimming is an effective cardio workout with low impact on the body. You’ll reap the benefits of cardio without putting a lot of stress on your joints, preventing injuries that could be caused by excessive high impact exercises.
5] SNOW SPORTS
When it’s too cold to go for a run or walk, snow sports like skiing + snowboarding are great ways to get in some cardio during the colder months. Not into skiing or snowboarding, or there aren’t any mountains nearby? No biggie — unleash your inner kid, pull the old sled out of your garage, ++ find your nearest hill! You’ll get a #bonusburn pulling the sled back up the hill, too. ; )
6] TAKE YOUR DOG FOR A WALK
Show your furry friend some love + take him or her for a walk around the block, or through nearby trails for a bit of a hike. You’ll have great company during your cardio sesh, you’ll get to spend some time in the fresh air, ++ you’ll be keeping your pet healthy, too! No dog? You can earn some extra cash being a dog walker — yes, your dream *side hustle* does exist!
No matter how you get your body movin’ + your heart pumpin’, cardio should be a component of every workout plan. Lifting is a great workout, but adding variety to your routine with some cardio workouts will help prevent cardiovascular problems, keep your body from hitting a plateau, ++ improve your overall physical fitness. Whether you grab a friend, family member, or pet, or you prefer to ride solo, get up + groovin’ [literally]! ; )
